CHATTER: Highland's Rachel Garcia, Moorpark's Amanda Lorenz receive Cal-Hi Sports all-state first-team softball honors

Highland pitcher Rachel Garcia and Moorpark outfielder Amanda Lorenz were among 30 players selected to Cal-Hi Sports' all-state softball first-team roster.

Garcia and the Florida-bound Lorenz were also finalists for Cal-Hi state player of the year.

Garcia, a UCLA commit, was already honored as Gatorade state player of the year and Cal-Hi Sports state medium schools player of the year.

Saugus catcher and UCLA-bound Maddy Jelenicki, who played baseball last season following her transfer from Valencia, was a second-team all-state honoree, along with West Ranch shortstop Kylie Sorenson, a Stanford signee, Burbank pitcher Caitlyn Brooks, a Notre Dame commit, and Penn State-bound Kristina Brackpool of Valencia.

Camarillo shortstop Hayley Chamberlain, a Houston signee, was the lone area player selected to the all-state third-team roster.

Brooks, Garcia, Jelenicki and Lorenz were also recognized on the all-state first-team underclass roster, with El Camino Real's McKenna Arriola (Oregon State), Crescenta Valley's Hannah Cookson (Long Beach State) and Oaks Christian's Kelly Spear (Baylor) selected to the second team.

Brooks and Garcia were medium schools first-team picks, with Bellarmine-Jefferson's Monique Landini, a St. John's signee, the area's lone all-state small schools first-team honoree.

Locals come up short of winning USA Volleyball Junior National titles

Louisville graduate Jasmine Burton, along

with former Harvard-Westlake standouts Madison McAndrews and Arielle Winfield, captured a silver medal with Sunshine Volleyball's Club Westside team in the girls 18-under open division at the 34th annual USA Volleyball Junior National Championships at Dallas Convention Center.

Sunshine, which also features athletes from Brentwood, Marymount, Palisades and Santa Monica, suffered a 25-20, 25-17 loss Monday to Texas Advantage Volleyball Club in the gold bracket final.

Sunshine went 9-2 in the four-day, 32-team tournament, the only two losses to Texas Advantage (10-0), including a 25-15, 25-18 setback Saturday.

Flintridge Sacred Heart's Sophia Coffey and Emily Develle, along with Eagle Rock's Sofia Mastro, helped San Gabriel Elite Roshambo finish third in the 17-under open division.

San Gabriel (6-4) lost 25-20, 21-25, 15-11 in the gold bracket semifinals to Academy Volleyball Cleveland Rox. It marked the second time in the four-day, 32-team tournament that San Gabriel lost to AVC Cleveland Rox, which fell 25-19, 25-21 to Texas Advantage Volleyball Club in the championship.

Sunshine won the 17-under bronze bracket with a 25-17, 20-25, 15-12 victory over Club Fusion of Illinois.

Oaks Christian's Jackie Berens and Shelby Livingstone, along with Harvard-Westlake's Nicole Elattrache, contributed to Sunshine's ninth-place finish.

San Gabriel Elite Roshambo's 18-under team placed fifth in the American Division, losing in the gold bracket quarterfinals.

La Canada graduates Micaela Anderson, Lauren Streeter and Kendall Walbrecht contributed for San Gabriel, which won its first eight matches, before suffering an 18-25, 25-17, 15-8 loss to Gold Cal Juniors Black from El Dorado Hills.

Jason Kelly hired at Harvard-Westlake

Jason Kelly has been hired as athletic director at Harvard-Westlake, filling the vacancy following the recent departure of Vinnie Orlando, who accepted the same position at Eaglecrest High in Centennial, Colo., after a year working with the Wolverines.

Kelly had been the head of athletics at Milken Community High and Stephen S. Wise schools since 2004.

Tal Sahar headed to Calabasas

Taft junior guard Tal Sahar is transferring to play basketball at Calabasas.

Sahar averaged 9.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 steals, along with making 43 3-pointers as a sophomore at Taft.

Sahar should help the Coyotes overcome the recent loss of guard Roxanna Barahman, who transferred to Oaks Christian.
