Growth rebound may herald Canada's economic spring

By Louise Egan

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's economy delivered a welcome surprise in February, growing faster than expected and prompting economists to upgrade their forecasts for the first quarter, although none expect the central bank to raise interest rates any time soon.

Monthly gross domestic product grew 0.3 percent, Statistics Canada said Tuesday, while also revising upward its growth estimate for January, to 0.3 percent from 0.2 percent.

It cited the potash mining, oil and gas and manufacturing sectors as the main sources of strength.

"Overall, a ray of sunshine in an economy that needs all it can get," said Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at CIBC World Markets.

The Canadian economy has long recovered from the 2008-09 recession but stalled in the second half of last year, posting the two weakest quarters of growth since the crisis.

After many months of disappointment, analysts found themselves in the unusual position of having forecasts that were too downbeat. Most now see economic growth in the first quarter exceeding the 1.5 percent annualized rate predicted by the Bank of Canada (BoC) earlier this month, and possibly even above 2 percent, depending on how March unfolds.

Still, the central bank is going to remain cautious until it sees more evidence the economy is on the mend, said Derek Holt, vice president at Scotiabank.

"This probably means that there is slightly less spare capacity than the BoC estimated in the April Monetary Policy Report, but not terribly so. Further, with the housing correction still progressing and inflation undershooting the BoC's 2 percent target, policy is still going nowhere for a long time," he said.

The bank has held its key rate at 1 percent since September 2010. It now says its next move will be a rate hike but only after an unspecified "period of time".

The Canadian dollar firmed to a session high against the U.S. dollar immediately after the data. At 9:35 a.m., the currency was trading at C$1.0100 versus the U.S. dollar, or 99.00 U.S. cents, stronger than its level shortly before the data was released and stronger than Monday's finish of C$1.0116, or 98.85 U.S. cents.

Natural resource industries lifted the overall economy in February. The mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction sector expanded 2.2 percent due to a significant output increase from potash mines, increased oil production and support activities in the energy sector.

The hard-hit manufacturing sector continued to recover with 0.8 percent growth and construction gained 0.2 percent.

Overall, goods-producing industries grew 0.9 percent.

Services, by contrast, eked out a 0.1 percent gain as the end of a labor dispute in professional hockey continued to boost the arts and entertainment sector, offsetting a downturn in wholesale trade.

In other upbeat data on Tuesday, the composite leading indicator developed by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, a think tank, rose 0.3 percent in March, compared with 0.2 percent in February on strength in financial markets and commodity prices, although the housing index remained a drag on the economy.

Canadian consumers, however, leaned against outright optimism in April. The Conference Board of Canada reported consumer confidence fell 4.9 points in the month in "the continuation of disconcerting trend", whereas U.S. consumer confidence rose 6.2 points in April.

Canadians were particularly pessimistic about job prospects, with sentiment at a 10-month low.

WEAK C$ HELPS PRODUCER PRICES

Canadian producer prices climbed 0.1 percent in March from February as the Canadian dollar weakened against its U.S. counterpart, lifting prices for motor vehicles and other products, Statscan also reported on Tuesday.

Without the exchange rate effect, the industrial product price index would have fallen 0.3 percent because of falling prices for petroleum and coal as well as for some metals, the federal agency said.

Analysts surveyed by Reuters had forecast, on average, a 0.3 percent rise in the price of goods as they leave the factory gate.

In the 12 months to March, producer prices rose 0.9 percent.

Raw materials prices unexpectedly fell 1.7 percent in the month, mainly due to lower prices for crude oil. Compared with a year earlier, raw materials were down 2 percent.

Reconstructions: What ancient mummies have to tell us about the perils of modern life

By Matt Crenson

Web edition: April 29, 2013

Once you hit a certain age, visiting a doctor is basically a guilt trip. All that satisfying stuff you eat, drink or smoke is killing you, a white-coated overachiever tells you. You need to exercise and lose weight, or the grim reaper will be at your door long before you?re ready. And it will all be your fault.

There?s truth in that message. The primary causes of death in Western society today are cardio?vascular disease and cancer, two diseases that are very much tied up with what we put in our bodies and how we use and abuse them. If you eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and abstain from smoking and excessive drink, your odds of living to a ripe old age do in fact increase.

But how much? Are cancer and cardiovascular disease primarily caused by the excesses of life in a modern industrial society? Or are they the inevitable end of a long and otherwise healthy life? At some level, heart disease and cancer must kill so many of us simply because in the past, plagues and saber-toothed cats beat them to it.

CT scans of ancient mummies from Egypt, Peru, Alaska and the U.S. Southwest suggest that clogged arteries have always been a fact of life, even for people who defined fast food as a swift-running ungulate. Researchers recently examined 137 mummies for evidence of calcified plaques associated with major arteries, and found that 34 percent of them probably had some atherosclerosis when they died.

Using skeletal features to estimate how old these mummies were at death, researchers showed that atherosclerosis risk increased with age. About 15 percent of those who died before age 30 had sclerotic deposits, an April 6 paper in Lancet reported, but the rate among those who died in their 40s was more than 50 percent.

The paper?s authors, an international team of pathologists and archaeologists, looked at diet and lifestyle factors that might have encouraged atherosclerosis. But there were no epidemiological smoking guns. The Egyptians ate something very close to the ?Mediterranean diet? that a recent Spanish study showed greatly benefits cardiovascular health. The Unangans of coastal Alaska ate a diet high in fish oil, which has been shown to lower cholesterol and potentially reduce cardiovascular risk. In Peru and the U.S. Southwest, people hunted, farmed and gathered a richly varied diet devoid of dairy, processed sugar and lots of other stuff that tastes really good.

The one risk factor all of these ancient people probably did face was inflammation. In the last decade or so, it has become apparent that the processes our bodies use to fight off infection and heal injury also do a lot of damage. Chronic inflammation ? even something as apparently trivial as gum disease ? has been shown to boost a person?s risk of heart attack.

In a world without antibiotics, flush toilets and Purell, the immune systems of the ancients would have been in a constant state of agitation. Other mummy studies have shown, for example, that tuberculosis was widespread in Egypt and present in the New World during ancient times.

Inflammation has been associated with cancer as well. But for some reason, researchers have found very few signs of cancer in ancient mummies. Writing in 2010 in Nature Reviews Cancer, two researchers proposed that this dearth of evidence suggests cancer may have been rare before modern times. They weren?t arguing that cancer didn?t exist at all before people started eating Cheetos and smoking Marlboros: One of the authors, retired pathologist and biologist Michael R. Zimmerman of Villanova University near Philadelphia, recently diagnosed a rectal carcinoma in an Egyptian mummy dating to the 3rd or 4th century A.D. But such diagnoses are rare. It could be that until recently people just didn?t live long enough to develop cancer very often. Or, he and A. Rosalie David of the University of Manchester in England suggested, it could be that modern life immerses us in a sea of carcinogens that ancient people never encountered.

Then again, it?s also possible that researchers just haven?t looked hard enough. When scientists from Portugal and Egypt did CT scans on three mummies housed at the National Archaeological Museum in Lisbon, they found bone lesions in and around the pelvis of a man who died 2,250 years ago that indicated prostate cancer. That discovery, described in 2011 in the International Journal of Paleopathology, was only the second oldest diagnosed case of prostate cancer: The oldest was seen in the skeleton of a Scythian king who died 2,700 years ago. Another study found 13 malignant bone tumors among 3,967 buried in Hungary between the 3rd and 16th centuries. That doesn?t sound like many, but similar cancers are no more common today.

Knowing the extent to which modern diseases are products of our environment could offer valuable clues to preventing the biggest killers of our time. But as we search for clues to our own demise in the remains of those who met theirs so many centuries ago, we should also have the wisdom to remember the message that is clearly written on every mummy?s face: Soon enough, all of us will meet their fate.

(AP) ? For anyone waiting for the draft of the quarterbacks ? players included ? it came Saturday in the fourth round.

A shopping spree for signal callers opened the final day of the draft with Southern California's Matt Barkley taken by Philadelphia after a trade with Jacksonville.

Yes, it was three rounds later than Barkley hoped for. Same thing for Ryan Nassib of Syracuse, Landry Jones of Oklahoma and Tyler Wilson of Arkansas, the other quarterbacks chosen in Round 4.

"We're going to take the best value on the board," coach Chip Kelly said, adding the Eagles rated Barkley in the top 50. "There's a prime example. The best value on the board by far was Matt. He's an extremely mature young man, intelligent, articulate. He has that 'it' factor."

Perhaps. But he seemed to have a lot more of it last year. Barkley was projected as a first-round selection last year, but opted to return to school. He and the Trojans slumped, Barkley injured his shoulder, and his stock plummeted.

"I try not to get stressed about things I can't control," Barkley said when asked about his drop in the draft. "I'm just glad I know where my home is and I can't wait to hit the playbook."

He will join quarterbacks Michael Vick and Nick Foles in Philadelphia.

The New York Giants, hardly in need of a quarterback with Eli Manning in his prime, still dealt with Arizona to move up for Nassib.

Nassib, from the Philadelphia suburbs, took a call from Giants coach Tom Coughlin, but wasn't sure what Coughlin told him.

"To be honest with you, I blacked out. I didn't get everything," Nassib said. "What I did get from him was that first off I had to cut my ties with the Philadelphia Eagles and switch, which won't be a problem."

Oakland, which acquired Matt Flynn from Seattle in the offseason to be its starter, followed two picks later at No. 112 overall with Wilson. Three spots after that, Pittsburgh grabbed Jones, probably hoping to groom him behind Ben Roethlisberger.

A former quarterback, Denard Robinson of Michigan, is headed to Jacksonville, which had one of the league's worst offenses the last two years. Robinson will be switched to running back or receiver by the Jaguars; he set the NCAA record for career yards rushing (4,495) by a quarterback.

"A lot of people have put me at different positions," he said. "Now it's time to go to work."

South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore, who would have been a high pick if healthy but is coming off a second severe knee injury, went to the 49ers 131st overall. San Francisco can afford to "redshirt" Lattimore because it has a strong stable of runners, including Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James.

"We really haven't even talked about that, so I don't have any clue," Lattimore said about possibly sitting out 2013 to heal completely. "My main goal right now is to go in there and work hard, go in there and learn the offense, and if I'm ready to play, I'm going to play, and if I'm not, I'm not."

Lattimore, who dislocated his left knee and tore three ligaments last season, said he spoke with Gore during his rehab.

"And now I'm with the 49ers, and it's just a great, great situation for me," Lattimore said.

Three kickers went in the fifth round: punters Jeff Locke of UCLA to Minnesota and Sam Martin of Appalachian State to Seattle, and placekicker Caleb Sturgis of Florida to Miami.

National champion Alabama, which had four players chosen previously ? three in the first round ? had four more go on the final day: linebacker Nico Johnson to Kansas City with the pick after Barkley was taken; guard Barrett Jones, who can play all offensive line positions, to the Rams; and DTs Jesse Williams to Seattle and Quinton Dial to San Francisco.

4. The Venue

Panama is the southernmost country of Central America, bordered to the north by the Caribbean Sea, to the south by the Pacific Ocean, to the east by Colombia and to the west by Costa Rica.?Its early status as a transit country with its famous Panama Canal, has allowed Panama to become a meeting point of cultures from around the globe.

Santa Catalina is a quiet surf town located in the Province of Veraguas and is home to several hundred people who lead simple lives, many as fishermen.

Besides surfing, Santa Catalina is also known for its sport fishing, diving and snorkeling. It?s also the departure point for Coiba Island, a National Park that covers over 430,000 acres, making it one of the largest marine parks in the world.

5. The Wave

The wave is world-class. It breaks along a shallow reef that creates a perfect right-hand powerful and hollow wave. Santa Catalina handles solid swells in the 8-12 feet range.

The event was scheduled to take place during the active Southern Hemisphere swell season that produces great waves for the region. Santa Catalina will provide a long right with an incredible barrel section. The main wave is located approximately 300 meters from shore, so you can get there paddling or by boat. It is a break that picks up sizeable waves in any type of swell coming mainly from the south or southwest.

6. The Prize

The world?s best surfers will gather to compete for the Individual and Team Gold Medals, the International Olympic Committee President?s Trophy and the Fernando Aguerre World Team Trophy, named for and donated by the ISA President, who was first elected in 1994 and has been elected 7 times since.

Additionally, in celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of the Pacific Ocean, the World Team Champion will be awarded the ?Copa V Centenario Del Descubrimiento Del Oceano Pacifico,? or 5th Century Cup of the Discovery of the Pacific Ocean. This commemorative trophy marks the discovery of the Pacific Ocean during the colonial era by the Conquistador Vasco N??ez de Balboa.

7. The History

The ISA World Surfing Games began in 1964 under the name ISF World Championships, and were run by the International Surfing Federation, the first surfing international organization in history. Google buys startup that summarizes online content

(AP) ? Google has bought Wavii, a Seattle startup behind an application that condenses online content for time-pressed Web surfers.

Both companies confirmed the deal Friday. As with most of its acquisitions, Google isn't disclosing how much it paid for Wavii.

Wavii's technology grasps the context of language so it can summarize the main points in news stories and other content.

Although Wavii's app is shutting down, CEO Adrian Aoun says the startup's technology will be used in other Google products.

Google Inc., which is based in Mountain, View, Calif., declined to discuss its plans for Wavii. The natural-language technology could be useful for Google's Knowledge Graph, an 11-month-old feature that summarizes information in boxes that appear alongside some of Google's search results.

Hyundai Thinks Suicide Should Help Sell Cars: The Pipe Job Ad ...

Hyundai Thinks Suicide Should Help Sell Cars: The Pipe Job AdHyundai, the world?s fourth largest automobile manufacturer in the world, apparently believes showing a man trying to kill himself in one of their vehicles is good marketing. The ad, called ?Pipe Job? and created by the ad agency Innocean Europe, depicts a man taping a hose from a Hyundai ix35?s exhaust pipe into the cabin, trying to commit suicide.

It then shows the man sitting in the cabin, waiting to die.

A few frames later, the garage lights come back on, and the man opens the garage door. The tag line is, ?The New ix35 with 100% water emissions.?

Yes, very tasteful. Maybe if you were brain and dead and haven?t been alive for the past three decades. Nothing like making fun of people with mental illness, clinical depression, or a disability, is there Hyundai (and Innocean)??

Warning, we?ve included a copy of the video below. Do not continue on if you don?t wish to watch it.

I can imagine some of the other ideas that Hyundai and Innocean are also discussing right now:

  • A cancer patient is shown dying in a hospital bed, and asks for one last drink of water. They wheel her out to the ix35?s exhaust pipe and instruct her to drink away.
  • Lawn need watering? Just start up the ix35 and continually drive it around the yard, letting the water from the tailpipe drip onto the grass.
  • A poor family is shown holding their cupped hands under the ix35?s tailpipe, dying for a drink of water.

Here?s the offensive video. You?ve been warned, so don?t view it if you or someone you know has died by suicide in this manner:

This ad has particular poignancy for me ? and I suspect tens of thousands of other people around the world ? as I knew someone who took their life via this method. Rob was my childhood best friend, and one of the primary motivations for me going into public education and advocacy as my career rather than providing individual psychotherapy to patients. He died November 8, 1990, and his death is a memory that I?m reminded of nearly every week as I work on the resources that go to make up this site.

Seeing such a vivid depiction of the end of a man?s life ? to sell cars no less ? is not just in poor taste. It is thoughtless, and even mean-spirited. As though human life is worth so little, we can demonstrate someone failing at taking their own life to help promote the attributes of this stupid pile of metal. A Hyundai.

Criticism of the Hyundai Video

The Hyundai ad is incomprehensible in an age where we are finally making inroads in the public understanding of mental illness? Of reducing the discrimination and prejudice against those who have one. A depiction of suicide in the media ? even when reporting on a news item ? can up the rate of suicides temporarily, referred to as suicide contagion. Did the ad agency who produced this ad even know that? Did they care?

Does it make a point? If one can get past the gruesome darkness of the ad, I suppose the point that you can?t kill yourself in this particular Hyundai is noted. But really? Out of all the options you have to demonstrate a car?s eco-friendliness, this is the one you go with?

Hyundai North America is distancing itself from its European counterparts with this statement:

We at Hyundai Motor America are shocked and saddened by the depiction of a suicide attempt in an inappropriate UK video featuring a Hyundai. Suicide merits thoughtful discussion, not this type of treatment.

Further criticism and commentary can be found over on this article by Matthew Herper, Update: Hyundai North America Disavows ?Particularly Graphic And Dangerous? Car Ad.

I just have to shake my head that this ad got through multiple levels of management review and approval in two different companies. Everybody probably was congratulating themselves on producing an ?edgy? or ?thought provoking? ad ? while trying to sell pieces of steel on wheels.

Red line: Obama cautious on Syria chemical weapons

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Proceeding cautiously, President Barack Obama insisted on Friday that any use of chemical weapons by Syria would change his "calculus" about U.S. military involvement in the 2-year-old civil war ? but said too little was known about a pair of likely sarin attacks to order aggressive action now.

The president's public response to the latest intelligence reflected the lack of agreement in Washington over whether to use America's military to intervene in the civil war, ? and if so, how. But lawmakers in both parties expressed concern that inaction could embolden Syrian President Bashar Assad and perhaps other countries including North Korea and Iran.

U.S. officials declared on Thursday that the Syrian government probably had used chemical weapons twice in March, newly provocative acts in the civil war that has killed more than 70,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. The U.S. assessment followed similar conclusions from Britain, France, Israel and Qatar ? key allies eager for a more aggressive response to Syrian conflict.

Obama, in his first comments about the new intelligence disclosure, said Friday, "For the Syrian government to utilize chemical weapons on its people crosses a line that will change my calculus and how the United States approaches these issues." He has issued similar warnings for months, saying the use of chemical weapons or transfer of the stockpiles to terrorists would cross a "red line" and carry "enormous consequences."

Seeking to show resolve, Obama added Friday that "I've meant what I said."

The president is facing political pressure from a familiar contingent of senators, led by Arizona Republican John McCain, favoring a quick and strong U.S. response. But even those lawmakers appear opposed to an American military invasion and are instead supporting creation of a protective "no-fly zone" or another narrow, safe zone inside Syria, along its border with Turkey.

Some lawmakers voiced concern that if Obama doesn't make good on his promise to respond aggressively if it's shown that Assad used chemical weapons, his inaction could send a damaging message to the world.

"There's no question that when the United States takes a position that this crosses a line that our failure to respond has implications," said Rep. David Cicilline, a Democratic member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "So that if we, in fact, determine that chemical weapons were used, I think the expectation is that we and the coalition and others take some action."

Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., wondered whether the red line was "turning into a pink line."

White House officials insisted Obama's caution was not an indication that the line was shifting. Officials said firm evidence of a chemical weapons attack would trigger a U.S. response ? unspecified ? and would not be contingent on the size and scope of the use.

Obama met at the White House with Jordan's King Abdullah II, whose nation is suffering amid an influx of refugees spilling over its border with Syria. The president promised to vigorously pursue more information about chemical weapons attacks, including exactly who might be responsible and how they might have been carried out.

But the president set no deadline for answers.

"The president wants the facts," spokesman Jay Carney said. "And I'm not going to set a timeline because the facts need to be what drives this investigation, not a deadline."

Syrian officials denied Friday that their government forces had used chemical weapons against rebels.

Hanging over the Obama administration's approach to the new intelligence reports are hard lessons learned from the Iraq war, when faulty intelligence drew the U.S. into a lengthy and expensive conflict. Obama, as a candidate for U.S. Senate, opposed the Iraq war and made ending the conflict a priority in his first term.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill appeared to be drawing on similar lessons from more than a decade ago. Many who sounded the alarm about Saddam Hussein and the possibility of weapons of mass destruction ? and strongly stood with President George W. Bush's decision to invade Iraq ? were far more muted on Friday.

Following a closed-door briefing by Secretary of State John Kerry, they stressed the importance of building international support for any military move against Syria rather than unilateral U.S. action. The sectarian strife in Iraq and the lawlessness in Libya after the killing of longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2011 stand as sober reminders of what can happen.

"We want to do everything we can to avoid putting boots on the ground," said Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the senior Democrat on the House intelligence committee. "I don't think that we, just as the United States, want to go in to another war."

Polling shows war-weary Americans are broadly opposed to the notion of the U.S. military intervening in Syria. Just one in five said the U.S. has a responsibility to do something about the fighting in Syria, according to a CBS News poll conducted in late March.

But faced with more specific scenarios, Americans appear more willing to back U.S. involvement. In an ABC News/Washington Post poll late last year, 63 percent said they would support military intervention if the Syrian government used chemical weapons against its people.

Roughly the same number said they would support using American military aircraft to create a no-fly zone if no ground troops were involved.

The White House faces a limited choice of military options to help the rebels oust Assad.

Arming the rebels would run into the reality that a military group fighting alongside them has pledged allegiance to al-Qaida. Establishing a no-fly zone poses a significant challenge, as Syria possesses an air defense system far more robust than the U.S. and its allies overwhelmed in Libya two years ago.

Thus far, the Obama administration has limited its assistance to the Syrian rebels to nonlethal aid, including military-style equipment such as body armor and night vision goggles. The U.S. has also deployed about 200 troops to Jordan to assist that country's military, and has participated in NATO's placement of Patriot missile batteries in Turkey near the border to protect against an attack from Syria.

Shoppers Drug Mart says generic pricing to hit 2013 same-store sales

By Krithika Krishnamurthy

(Reuters) - Shoppers Drug Mart Corp, Canada's biggest pharmacy chain, said tightened pricing controls for generic drugs will push its 2013 pharmacy same-store sales outlook to the lower end of its previous guidance.

The company had previously forecast pharmacy same-store sales growth of between 1.5 percent to 2.5 percent for 2013.

Canada's provinces and territories agreed in January to tighten caps on prices of six widely prescribed generic drugs to cut costs for private and government health programs.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall then told Reuters that more could be done to cut the cost of generics, among the highest in the world.

The new rules mandate drugstores charge no more than 18 percent of the price of the brand-name equivalent, lower than the previous 25 percent to 40 percent cap. The rules kicked off on April 1.

On a post-earnings conference call, Chief Executive Domenic Pilla said "there will be several impacts" of this new rule in the second quarter.

Price controls have crimped growth at Shoppers and rivals such as Jean Coutu Group Inc in recent years.

Average prescription value fell 4.8 percent in the first quarter ended March 23.

However, total sales in the quarter rose 4 percent to C$2.49 billion mostly on higher over-the-counter medications, food and cosmetics. The cough and cold season in the first half of the quarter also helped drive OTC sales.

Total same-store sales, or sales at stores open for at least a year, rose 2.5 percent. Same-store sales increased 3.3 percent at the front of the store and 1.6 percent at pharmacies.

Shoppers' net profit at C$119 million ($117 million), or 59 Canadian cents per share, was in line with analysts' estimates, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

"In the context of the current environment and the low confidence around the earnings visibility, an in-line quarter was actually a beat for Shoppers," said analyst Kenric Tyghe of Raymond James.

The company has also been expanding stores and opening new ones to boost sales.

Shoppers, which also operates the Murale luxury spas, opened seven stores and acquired four in the quarter, taking total number of stores to 1,368.

"The team is actively engaged through all parts of the country, with a focus on Ontario and Western Canada, with regards to acquisition opportunities, " Chief Financial Officer Bradley Lukow said on the call.

The company has allotted about 70 percent of its 2013 capital expenditure of about C$275 million to expanding its store network.

Shares of the company closed up 15 Canadian cents at C$44.85 on Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange. It hit a two-year high of C$45.44 earlier in the day.

So far, the great tit has coped with climate change

DEMANDING DINERS

Lively European birds called great tits haven?t kept up with climate changes that would require earlier nesting. Researchers have uncovered a quirk of population dynamics that?s giving the mistimed population some temporary protection.

Credit: Dreamstime via NIOO-KNAW

Though climate change has knocked little birds called great tits out of sync with their chicks? food supply, the birds are maintaining their population numbers, a new study finds. But the way the tits cope may give them only a temporary reprieve.

?It?s buying them time,? says ecologist Tom Reed of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology in Wageningen.

Warmer springs mean that the peak food demands for Parus major chicks come later than the annual burst of local caterpillars. With less food, fewer young survive to leave their nests, Reed reports. However, the smaller resulting cohort of fledglings faces less competition for winter nuts and other resources. So a greater percentage of the youngsters survive through the winter than previously did, and ? so far ? this survival uptick has kept the study population from shrinking, Reed and an international team report in the April 26 Science.

These ?quite acrobatic little birds? are close relatives of North America?s chickadees, Reed says. Decades ago, researchers set out nest boxes in a Dutch national park, and great tits readily moved in, forming a manageable study population.

Intense monitoring allowed Marcel Visser, also at Wageningen and a coauthor of the study, to realize that the nest timing was going wrong. In 1998, he and a colleague reported that the park?s great tits wereone of the first documented examples of birds getting ecologically out of sync with food because of climate change.

Springtime in northern Europe had become unusually warm by the 1980s, and the trend has continued. The birds don?t migrate so they and the insects are exposed to the same weather. But caterpillars are more sensitive to a change in temperature, Reed says. The caterpillars and birds also take their temperature cues at different times in the spring. The differences mean the caterpillars tend to peak a lot earlier. The birds, unfortunately, haven?t kept pace.

With 37 years of data in the new study, researchers also detected that this mismatch is changing evolutionary pressures on the great tits. The breeding pairs that nest a bit earlier now produce more surviving offspring, so the population is getting a little nudge toward the new timing regimen. It remains to be seen whether the climate will change too fast for this slow adaptation to protect the population.

This kind of climate-induced mismatch between animals and their food supply has become a common worry among biologists. Pied flycatchers, small birds that spend winters in Africa, don?t return to Europe soon enough to catch the spring insect bonanza. In West Greenland,, migratory caribou miss the best grazing. And in Norway, puffins are declining as the spring bloom of plankton often misses the main hatching of herring and shrinks the -food supply later needed to feed puffin chicks.

Still unclear is whether any out-of-sync species besides the great tits would get some relief from the benefits of lessened competition among youngsters. ?We should be very cautious about suggesting that this is a widespread response to [food-supply] mismatch,? says ecologist Sarah Burthe from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Edinburgh. Many studies, she says, already show that animals raise fewer total offspring in years with significant mismatches.

Real estate firm settles long-running dispute with Bank of America ...

After nearly five years of wrangling, Bank of America and Charlotte real estate firm American Asset Corp. have settled a dispute over $130 million in construction loans on properties in Charlotte and Raleigh.

AAC develops and manages retail, office and industrial space on behalf of investors, and now has a portfolio of about 6 million square feet across the Southeast. The conflict with Bank of America involved 10 of those properties, including the Whitehall Corporate Center and Shopton Ridge Industrial Center in southwest Charlotte.

The financial crisis hit in the middle of a number of development projects, just as the real estate group?s loans were due to be renegotiated. AAC claimed that Bank of America did not fulfill its obligations to fund the money it needed to bring in tenants and stabilize the projects.

Bank of America claimed AAC was in default on its loans and failed to turn over lease payments. The bank began foreclosing on several of the properties. AAC ultimately sued to hold off the foreclosures and prevent the bank from selling the loans.

Under the agreement reached this week, Bank of America has issued new five-year loans on the properties, essentially returning them to a normal environment, AAC said.

?We?re satisfied that we?ve gotten to a very positive solution,? AAC president Paul Herndon said. ?It was a crazy few years, the past few years, for most everyone. Unfortunately, at times you have to use the legal process to put things back together. We got it accomplished, and it ended up being consensual at the end.?

Bank of America confirmed that the litigation had been dismissed, but declined further comment.

PFT: Goodell?is close with suspended players

RadioCityGetty Images

There will be ?enhanced? security guidelines for the NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York, the league said Tuesday.

According to the NFL, those entering Radio City Music Hall for the draft must consent to searches by security personnel, with pat-downs and metal detectors among the measures that can be employed.?What?s more, all items brought into the building will be inspected, the league said.

The draft begins Thursday and runs through Saturday in New York.

The league, along with Radio City Music Hall and New York City police, are recommending those attending the draft to limit the number of objects brought into the building.?No containers will be allowed inside, with backpacks among the excluded items.?The NFL?s statement on the security measures has a list of banned items.

?Fans are urged to bring nothing larger than a very small purse,? the league said.

The league noted it already had security procedures in place before these additions.

?The NFL and its clubs have operated with a very high level of security since 9/11 for all of our games and events,? said Jeffrey Miller, NFL vice president and chief security officer in the league-issued statement. ?With the help of the FBI, New York Police Department, Radio City and our private security partners, we will enhance our already comprehensive plans for the safety of our fans and other attendees.?

A noticeable security presence at major sporting events doesn?t figure to go away anytime soon, and the NFL?s enhancements make sense, considering recent events.

Google joins the FIDO Alliance, supports its two-factor authentication standard

Google's already investing in two-factor authentication, but it's making a bigger commitment to the security method by joining the FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance's board of directors. Founded in-part by heavyweights Lenovo and PayPal, the group envisions a future where an open standard developed by it will lead to interoperable two-step security that can log users into sites and cloud apps across the web -- not to mention replace passwords as we know them. While support for USB keys are certainly in the works, the group expects to throw its weight behind the likes of NFC, voice and facial recognition, fingerprint scanners and more. There's no telling how soon FIDO's efforts will bear fruit, but the search titan's support should help move things along.

Stunning 3D Sperm Images Reveal New Motion

Aydogan Ozcan is an expert on optics and imaging and leads the Bio- and Nano-Photonics Laboratory in the Electrical Engineering and Bioengineering Departments at UCLA. He contributed this article to LiveScience's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.

This past week, our research team announced the discovery of an entirely new pattern of movement for a familiar microscopic swimmer: sperm.

In specimens from both humans and horses, we were able to track thousands of cells at once to identify a sperm swimming pattern we had never before seen. The unusual, coiled-ribbon pattern was significantly more complex than sperm swimming patterns we observed last year, all findings that could have implications for fertility, health and our understanding of the microscopic world.

Finding the new swimming pattern was a difficult observation to make, since the motion occurs at lengths that are smaller than one millionth of a meter. We had to develop special microscopy techniques that could achieve the necessary high resolution and fast frame rates.

Techniques we and other researchers developed for three-dimensional (3D) tracking of microscopic swimmers ? such as sperm, protists or bacteria ? had already revealed the unique swimming patterns of those organisms, including helical, star-spinning and flat motions that lie within a single plane. However, the new patterns, which we call chiral ribbons, remained undiscovered until now. [See Video of Spriraling Sperm in 3D]

While specialized lenses could provide the necessary magnification for us to observe such microscale, rapid events, lens-based microscopes are generally not well-suited for looking at a large number of objects scattered in a big volume.

Instead, we rely on an emerging set of techniques that use computation as a replacement for the physical function of lenses. Those new approaches can track a significantly larger number of individual, microscopic trajectories in 3D.

To execute those computational imaging techniques, we place samples (such as the sperm cells) onto a silicon sensor chip, the same image sensor that you might have on the back of your cellphone. By simply shining light onto the sample, we create shadows of the microscale objects and dynamically record them.

The shadows form holograms of the specimen, which we can digitally process to create an image of the micro-object without using any lenses. Our approach has a much higher throughput than others, and is better suited to reveal rare and unconventional 3D swimming events that occur at the microscale.

By simultaneously using two different wavelengths of light shining at separate angles (vertical and tilted at 45 degrees), our most recent imaging technique revealed an entirely new swimming pattern for human and horse sperm. The research was published on April 16 in Scientific Reports, a journal of the Nature Publishing Group.

We call the newly discovered swimming pattern chiral ribbons, which refers to planar surfaces that rotate orientation or slope as they move. Sperm swimming in chiral ribbon patterns swing their heads left-to-right and right-to-left along a flat plane that itself oscillates, resulting in a trajectory that tracks either as a helix or as a simple twist. The chiral ribbon swimming patterns cannot be represented or understood by any previously known swimming patterns for sperm, or any other microswimmers.

To track those unique 3D patterns, we used computational holographic imaging to follow more than 33,700 sperm cells at a high frame rate (up to 140 frames per second) over a relatively large sample volume of nine microliters ? more than 10 times what a lens-based optical microscope could achieve.

The chiral ribbon swimming behavior is rare ? less than 2 percent of the human sperm cells we tracked exhibit chiral ribbons, though the percentage increases to more than 27 percent for horse sperm. Quite interestingly, we also observed that the majority (more than 65 percent) of the chiral ribbons displayed by human sperm are right-handed, whereas around 85 percent of the chiral ribbons observed in horse sperm exhibit left-handed rotations.

In summary, our results illustrate and quantify the parameters of an entirely new swimming pattern ? chiral ribbons ? and could help us better understand the statistical behavior of various microswimmers, possibly shedding light onto the biophysics of their 3D motion.

This research could lead to a deeper understanding of how sperm move on their way to fertilization, or other functions, and how they react when encountering various stimuli including chemicals or toxins.?[Higher Sperm Counts Are a Breeze with a Kilt]

The same high-throughput technique can also be translated to better understand motion of other microscopic swimmers, including harmful bacteria.

More rain expected for already swollen Midwest rivers

CLARKSVILLE, Mo. (AP) ? Communities along the Mississippi River and other Midwestern waterways are vigilantly eyeing ? and in some cases hastily fortifying ? makeshift levees to hold back floodwaters that meteorologists say could worsen or be prolonged by looming storms.

An inch of rain was expected to fall from Oklahoma to Michigan through Tuesday, a new drenching that led the National Weather Service to heighten the forecast crest of some stretches of rivers while blunting the progress of other waterways' slow retreat.

Mark Fuchs, a National Weather Service hydrologist, said the latest dousing could be especially troubling for communities along the Illinois River, which he said is headed for record crests.

"Along the Illinois, any increase is going to be cause for alarm, adding to their uncertainty and, in some cases, misery," he said late Monday afternoon.

Last week's downpours brought on sudden flooding throughout the Midwest, and high water is blamed for at least three deaths. Authorities in LaSalle, Ill., spent Monday searching for a woman whose van was spotted days earlier near a bridge, and a 12-year-old boy was in critical condition after being pulled from a river near Leadwood, Mo., about 65 miles south of St. Louis.

The additional rain isn't welcome news in Clarksville, Mo., about 70 miles north of St. Louis.

Days after bused-in prison inmates worked shoulder to shoulder with the National Guard and local volunteers to build a makeshift floodwall of sand and gravel, the barrier showed signs of strain Monday. Crews scrambled to patch trouble spots and build a second sandbag wall to catch any water weaseling through.

In Grafton, Ill., some 40 miles northeast of St. Louis, Mayor Tom Thompson said small community was holding its own against the Mississippi that by early Monday afternoon was 10 feet above flood stage. Waters lapped against some downtown buildings, forcing shops such as Hawg Pit BBQ to clear out and detours to be put up around town ? one key intersection was under 8 inches of water.

"If it gets another foot (higher), it's going to become another issue," Thompson said. Many businesses "are kinda watching and holding their breath. ... Some things are going to really be close to the wire."

Elsewhere, smaller rivers caused big problems. In Grand Rapids, Mich., the Grand River hit a record 21.85 feet, driving hundreds of people from their homes and flooding parts of downtown.

Spots south of St. Louis aren't expected to crest until late this week, and significant flooding is possible in places like Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Cairo, Ill. Further downriver, flood warnings have been issued for Kentucky and Tennessee.
