The Chicken-Egg Paradox of Storytelling | Write to Done

A Guest Post By Larry Brooks of Storyfix.com

One day a chicken was standing on the side of the road. Actually, he was staring at the road, a little lost, when someone stopped and asked him this question:

Speaking as a chicken, which came first? you, or the egg??

To which the chicken, after pondering for a moment, replied, ?Who cares. I?m just trying to figure out why I?d want to cross this thing in the first place.?

Which is a different question, equally clich?. Consider yourself foreshadowed here, because the punchline is your fate as a writer.

Ever had a great omelet made from bad eggs? Or a bad omelet made from perfectly good eggs? Ever smelled a bad egg? Ever had an egg that started out fine, but you played around with it for so long that it went bad?

Have you ever not been completely sure what to do with an egg? Hard boiled, scrambled, diced into a salad? Deep fried?

What then? Do you keep cooking? Or do you begin anew with a fresh egg, one you haven?t mucked up,?perhaps leading to a different dish altogether?

And if you, the cook, don?t know what to do with the egg, especially a bad egg, where does that leave your hungry guest?

Of course I?m talking about storytelling here.

Our initial story ideas are very much like eggs. Precious, yet completely worthless until you do something with them. Not healthy or delicious until they?re cooked, seasoned and, if you consider yourself a chef, added to other ingredients and all gussied up, because presentation is everything.

How can something be precious and worthless at the same time?

Because it?s a paradox.

As is storytelling.

We evolve our eggs ? the initial spark of inspiration ? into something wonderful, called stories. When we do it right, our little cell of a story grows into something akin to a fully glorified banquet of dramatic possibilities? one that we, as the cooks in this literary kitchen, are obliged to bring forth. That is, if they are ever to be fit to consume. Otherwise the egg just sits there, getting old, until it smells up the joint.

Which brings us full circle. Because if the egg isn?t good, the meal will suffer for it. Which means, whether we begin with the egg (an idea), or we begin with the recipe (characters, setting and theme) and start mixing with the hope than an egg will soon appear? either way, which came first ? chicken or egg ? is no longer the point.

That?s why the chicken was staring at that road. He was squaring off with a different question altogether, caught in the paradox.

The paradox is why manuscripts go unpublished and dreams die. Because writers sometimes try to cook up bland ideas, stories with no compelling conceptual centerpiece. Bad eggs. Even when presented on fine china, the meal will be less than satisfying if the egg has gone bad.

Equally fatal is when the writer has a killer initial idea but doesn?t execute it well. Up to professional expectations and standards. Bad cooking.? Or at least not enough cheese and oregano to go with that egg.A great idea does not a great story make.

Which comes first doesn?t matter.

It?s the wrong question.

We need both the chicken (all the moving parts) and the egg (a killer idea), and we are allowed to get to them in no particular order. As long as we get to both.

The good news is that this is only truly a paradox when the writer doesn?t completely understand the relationship between the egg and the chicken of your story. Or ? analogy free for a moment ? doesn?t juxtapose the weight of an idea in context to the balance and flavor and nourishment of the surrounding story elements.

Ever heard the term ?all style, no substance? applied to a story? That?s a story without an egg somewhere in the mix. Vice versa, too: that?s a story that doesn?t live up to its inherent potential. The truth is that a successful story must have both an egg, and a recipe that stirs in all sorts of other goodness.

And therein resides the pothole in the road you, the chicken-wrangler in this analogy, need to cross. If you don?t recognize the duality of the necessity for both a strong conceptual egg and a delicious storytelling recipe, you?ll tumble keyboard-first into it.

And you likely won?t make it to the other side.

What kind of cook are you?

You can hatch an idea and begin to develop it into a story using a plan. Or, you can create a shell for an idea and go looking for it by drafting. Or a little of both.

Either way, it?s all the search for story. A base you must cover in writing any successful story.

As writers, we live and die by our ability to circle back and make sure our stories aren?t all broth and spice with no evidence of an egg anywhere in the mix. Our goal is to stir all the ingredients ? egg and other goodies ? into something that becomes a feast in excess of its independent parts.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To get to the other side, of course. Duh. That clich? answer remains a paradox.

Writers, however, need a better answer. We need to get beyond the paradox. For us, here?s the real answer: on the other side, where the readers are, awaits the full meal deal.

That?s where the egg was all along. Waiting to be found. Waiting to be given wings so it can turn into? a chicken.

The other side of the road is where the story is. Just watch out for those potholes.
Because however you get there, nobody gets to eat until you do.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Newt Gingrich disagrees with Rick Santorum's harsh criticism of the famous speech on religion that John F. Kennedy delivered as he campaigned to become the nation's first Roman Catholic president.

Gingrich and Santorum, each a Catholic seeking the GOP nomination, view Kennedy's words differently. Santorum says he felt sick after reading Kennedy's 1960 speech and believes it advocated absolute separation of church and state.

Gingrich calls it a "remarkable speech." He told Fox News Channel on Tuesday that Kennedy was reassuring voters that he wouldn't obey any foreign religious leader. Gingrich said Kennedy was declaring "that his first duty as president would be to do the job of president, and I think that's correct."

Gingrich does share Santorum's position on President Barack Obama, however. Gingrich said Obama's administration is "anti-religious."

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) ? More than 1,000 former teammates, family members and friends of Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter paid tribute to him Friday as much for his prowess on the field as for the type of man he was away from the ballpark.

Though television screens beamed images of Carter emerging from the dugout, embracing teammates in enveloping hugs and sliding into home plate, those who knew him spoke more of his compassion, his devotion to faith and family and his genuine goodness.

"I'm gonna miss that smile, I'm gonna miss every part of Gary Carter because of the way he was," said Johnny Bench, another Hall of Fame catcher. "For those who knew him, no words are necessary. For those who didn't, no words are adequate."

Carter died Feb. 16 of brain cancer. He was 57.

Tommy Hutton, who played with Carter on the Montreal Expos, remembered his friend's passion and enthusiasm. His three children drew laughter while talking of their father's obsessive neatness, organizing everything from his locker to the refrigerator. Tom Mullins, a pastor who befriended Carter, spoke of his competitiveness on everything, even over who recovered from knee surgery faster.

"The way he lived his life is the way that everybody wants to live their life," Bert Blyleven, another former player who became friends with Carter, said outside the service at Christ Fellowship Church.

Carter was an 11-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner. His single in the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series helped the Mets mount a charge against the Boston Red Sox and eventually beat them.

Carter played nearly two decades with the Mets, Montreal, San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He led the Expos to their only playoff berth and was the first player enshrined in Cooperstown wearing an Expos cap.

Players from throughout his career filed in to pay their respects, including Darryl Strawberry and other members of the championship Mets team. Before the nearly two-hour-long service began, footage of Carter projected onto huge screens showed him on the field, at home with his children, being interviewed by David Letterman, and in commercials for products from Ivory soap to 7-Up. Flower arrangements shaped like baseballs and home plates emblazoned with his No. 8 filled the stage, and there were nearby pictures of Carter and his trademark grin.

"All you can do is smile when you hear his name," said Andre Dawson, who played with Carter with the Expos and spoke outside the service.

Over and over, that smile was invoked by the speakers. Some called it electrifying, others infectious, others confident. But they all spoke of it being seared in their memories of a man they loved.

In his final days, Mullins said, Carter no longer could speak. His family and friends drew near. And though words were elusive, he still managed to flash a smile.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The mayor faced off with the president of Yale University on Tuesday over an effort by the city's police department to monitor Muslim student groups for any signs that their members harbored terrorist sympathies.

The Associated Press revealed over the weekend that in recent years the New York Police Department has kept close watch on Muslim student associations across the Northeast. The effort included daily tracking of student websites and blogs, monitoring who was speaking to the groups and sending an undercover officer on a whitewater rafting trip with students from the City College of New York.

Yale President Richard Levin was among a number of academics who condemned the effort in a statement Monday, while Rutgers University and leaders of student Muslim groups elsewhere called for investigations into the monitoring.

"I am writing to state, in the strongest possible terms, that police surveillance based on religion, nationality, or peacefully expressed political opinions is antithetical to the values of Yale, the academic community, and the United States," Levin wrote.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, dismissed those criticisms as baseless.

"I don't know why keeping the country safe is antithetical to the values of Yale," he said.

He said it was "ridiculous" to argue that there was anything wrong with officers keeping an eye on websites that are available to the general public.

"Of course we're going to look at anything that's publicly available in the public domain," he said. "We have an obligation to do so, and it is to protect the very things that let Yale survive."

Asked by a reporter if he thought it was a "step too far" to send undercover investigators to accompany students on rafting vacations, Bloomberg said: "No. We have to keep this country safe."

"It's very cute to go and blame everybody and say we should stay away from anything that smacks of intelligence gathering," he said. "The job of our law enforcement is to make sure that they prevent things. And you only do that by being proactive."

Bloomberg, an independent, added that he believed that police officers had respected people's privacy and obeyed the law.

The campus monitoring program was part of a broad effort by the NYPD, initiated after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, to try to spot any burgeoning terror cells in the U.S. before they had a chance to act. The NYPD monitoring of college campuses included schools far beyond the city limits.

Police talked with local authorities about professors 300 miles away in upstate Buffalo. The undercover agent who attended the City College rafting trip recorded students' names and noted in police intelligence files how many times they prayed. Detectives trawled Muslim student websites every day and, although professors and students had not been accused of any wrongdoing, their names were recorded in reports prepared for police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Officers kept tabs on student groups at Yale; Columbia; The University of Pennsylvania; Syracuse; Rutgers; New York University; Clarkson University; the State University of New York campuses in Buffalo, Albany, Stony Brook and Potsdam; Queens College, Baruch College, Brooklyn College and La Guardia Community College.

Levin said Yale's police department did not participate in any monitoring by the NYPD and was unaware of it.

An NYPD spokesman, Paul Browne, explained the effort as an attempt to learn more about student organizations that could be ripe for infiltration by terror recruiters. He cited 12 people arrested or convicted on terrorism charges in the United States and abroad who had once been members of Muslim student associations, or MSAs.

He acknowledged that police monitored student websites and collected publicly available information but said law-abiding students have nothing to fear.

"Students who advertised events or sent emails about regular events should not be worried about a terrorism file being kept on them," he said. "NYPD only investigated persons who we had reasonable suspicion to believe might be involved in unlawful activities."

A Muslim student leader at Yale, Faisal Hamid, challenged the NYPD's justification.

"An MSA is simply a group of Muslim students; just because a terrorist happened to be member of an MSA does not mean that MSAs, which nationally represents hundreds of thousands of Muslim students, have any connection to criminal activity," Hamid said. "Law enforcement should pursue actual leads, not imaginary ones based on Islamophobia."

Syracuse University does "not approve of, or support, any surveillance or investigation of student groups based solely on ethnicity, religion or political viewpoint," said Kevin Quinn, senior vice president for public affairs at Syracuse.

Columbia University "would obviously be concerned about anything that could chill our essential values of academic freedom or intrude on student privacy," spokesman Robert Hornsby said.

The University of Buffalo said in a statement that it "does not conduct this kind of surveillance, and, if asked, UB would not voluntarily cooperate with such a request. As a public university, UB strongly supports the values of freedom of speech and assembly, freedom of religion, and a reasonable expectation of privacy."

The University of Pennsylvania contacted the NYPD and received assurances that none of its students is being monitored, a spokesman said.

The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations called for officials to investigate to determine the extent of the monitoring and how to prevent it from happening again.

"They're just going out and casting a wide net around a whole community, so they're criminalizing in a way a whole community based on their religion," said Mongi Dhaouadi, director of CAIR in Connecticut.

Rutgers University, based in New Jersey, called for the NYPD to investigate its own activities. The Muslim Student Association at Rutgers called the monitoring a violation of civil rights.

"The Rutgers populace should openly condemn the clear violations of the NYPD, who conducted illegitimate profiling outside of their jurisdiction and breached the constitutional rights of an individual," the Rutgers student group said in a statement.

The Association of Muslim American Lawyers called for the New York attorney general to investigate.

The Muslim Students Association of the United States and Canada expressed concerns as well. Its president, Zahir Latheef, said the NYPD "clearly overstepped its boundaries when it began spying on average American Muslim college students who were simply taking whitewater rafting trips or innocently participating in school activities at their college or university campus."

The Muslim Students Association of the University at Buffalo said it felt discriminated against "by this secret investigation conducted by a police agency 400 miles away."

The student monitoring was part of a much larger intelligence operation that has put entire Muslim neighborhoods under scrutiny. The NYPD built databases showing where Muslims lived, worked, shopped and prayed. Plainclothes officers known as rakers eavesdropped in cafes, and informants known as mosque crawlers reported on weekly sermons.

Defenders of those efforts say police investigators need to understand the community to spot potential plots.

Bloomberg has repeatedly cited the need for vigilance, although he has insisted that the NYPD only follows leads and denied that it engages in wholesale spying.

Asked whether he was aware of an NYPD agent being sent on a college rafting trip, Bloomberg said, "I have no idea. The only whitewater rafting I've done I did with my daughter. I don't think she had a lot of information that I was interested in. In terms of her political views."

Since the AP began reporting on these programs in August, civil liberties groups and nearly three dozen members of Congress have called for the Justice Department to investigate.

But calls for an inquiry have yielded little. The NYPD's intelligence unit operates in secret. Even the City Council, which funds the department, isn't told about police intelligence operations. And though the NYPD receives hundreds of millions of dollars in federal money, the administration of President Barack Obama has repeatedly sidestepped questions about whether it endorses the NYPD's tactics.

Israel student society attacks peaceful Palestine ... - Aletho News

By Asa Winstanley ? The Electronic Intifada ? 02/20/2012

A student street theatre put on by the Palestine Society at the London School of Economics was attacked by members of the Israel Society today.

Part of Israeli Apartheid Week, the peaceful mock checkpoint was attacked with water bombs, knocking down some of the set. LSE Palestine Society member Jen Izaakson said they shouted ?Hamas? and ?death to Israel? as they threw the water bombs.

With breathtaking hypocrisy, the Israel Society later put out a statement demanding a ?full apology? and ?dialogue?, claiming the street theatre had been ?provocative?.

But Izaakson told EI the attack had only increased the Palestine Society?s ?resolve to do more stuff this week? promising the checkpoint stunt would be extended from one day to five in response. ?People did get hurt? by the water bomb attack, she said.

Reality of Israeli apartheid for Palestinians

The ?checkpoint? had been set up to illustrate to LSE students the kind of restrictions Palestinians in the West Bank regularly face at Israeli checkpoints. Palestinians in the West Bank are stopped and detained at Israeli checkpoints every day, while (often armed) Israeli settlers living in the same area sail through them unmolested.

LSE Jewish Society President Jay Stoll seemed perfectly aware of this reality. He claimed on twitter to have responded to the checkpoint that ?I?m Israeli and don?t need? an ID.

Although the students? union blamed unnamed ?organised individuals? Izaakson said she recognized the attackers as ?prominent members? of the Israel Society.

In a statement, the Palestine Society said: ?Students from LSESU Palestine Society re-enacted an Israeli checkpoint on Houghton Street, as the start of Israeli Apartheid Week. The re-enactment was to show the suffering Palestinians face on a daily basis, trying to live their lives. All students which took part, had pre-agreed to take part in the re-enactment and students who did not wish to be involved were not forced to take part. The re-enactment passed peacefully for two hours, with students responding incredibly positively to the action? We as a society call on management to continue to protect our right to peaceful protest on LSE?s campus.?

Rafeef Ziyadeh, a spokesperson for the London organizing committee of Israeli Apartheid Week told EI: ?This is typical of the usual intimidation from Zionist groups. It?s not going stop this year?s Israeli Apartheid Week, which is set to be the biggest one yet. We call on London students to come out and attend our week of events and not let Israel?s apologists provoke or intimidate them.?

The LSE Students? Union released a statement saying: ?Whilst peacefully re-enacting an Israeli checkpoint and talking to students about the issue, a small group of organised individuals ran towards members of the LSESU Palestine Society and threw water bombs which hit several students and knocked over property of the Palestine Society? The safety and welfare of students is of the utmost importance and the Union will be investigating the matter immediately in conjunction with the School.?

Israeli Hasbara minister worried about sucesses of Israeli Apartheid Week

Coming on the first day of Israeli Apartheid Week, this seems to be an attempt to draw pro-Palestinian students into violence, and attention away from the week?s events that seek to highlight the realities of Israeli apartheid in occupied Palestine.

A report in the Jerusalem Post yesterday said that Israel?s Hasbara (propaganda) minister Yuli Edelstein had dispatched Israeli settlers and other ?Faces of Israel? to London and other cities where Israeli Apartheid Week was taking place to ?answer to the attempts to de-legitimize Israel?.

Israeli Apartheid Week is taking place on university campuses around the world this month. The London event is on this week, with the biggest event set for Wednesday. You can read more about it on this Facebook page.

This Monday, Jan. 23, 2012 still file photo taken from video shows Harvard biomedical engineering professor David Edwards, creator of AeroShot, during an interview at Breathable Foods Lab, Inc., in Cambridge, Mass. The Food and Drug Administration will investigate the safety and legality of the product, an inhalable caffeine packed in a lipstick-sized canister. (AP Photo/Rodrique Ngowi, File)

(AP) ? U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials plan to investigate whether inhalable caffeine sold in lipstick-sized canisters is safe for consumers and if its manufacturer was right to brand it as a dietary supplement.

AeroShot went on the market late last month in Massachusetts and New York, and it's also available in France. Consumers put one end of the canister in their mouths and breathe in, releasing a fine powder that dissolves almost instantly.

Each grey-and-yellow plastic canister contains B vitamins, plus 100 milligrams of caffeine powder, about the equivalent of the caffeine in a large cup of coffee.

AeroShot inventor, Harvard biomedical engineering professor David Edwards, says the product is safe and doesn't contain taurine and other common additives used to enhance the caffeine effect in energy drinks.

AeroShot didn't require FDA review before hitting the U.S. market because it's sold as a dietary supplement. But New York's U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said he met with FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg and she agreed to review the safety and legality of AeroShot.

"I am worried about how a product like this impacts kids and teens, who are particularly vulnerable to overusing a product that allows one to take hit after hit after hit, in rapid succession," Schumer said.

Tom Hadfield, chief executive of Breathable Foods, which makes AeroShot in France, did not immediately respond to a phone message and email seeking comment. A publicist for the company also did not respond to a phone message and email seeking comment.

Sen. Schumer planned to announce the AeroShot review Sunday.

Meanwhile, an FDA official who was at the meeting confirmed the decision, telling The Associated Press that the review will include a study of the law to determine whether AeroShot qualifies as a dietary supplement. The product will also be tested to figure out whether it's safe for consumption, the official said.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because that official was not authorized to discuss the matter.

Schumer pressed the FDA in December to review AeroShot, saying he fears that it will be used as a club drug so that young people can keep going until they drop. He cited incidents that occurred last year when students looking for a quick and cheap buzz began consuming caffeine-packed alcoholic drinks they dubbed "blackout in a can" because of their potency.

Pressure from the senator and others helped persuade the FDA to stop the marketing, distribution and sale of these beverages, including Four Loko.

"We need to make sure that AeroShot does not become the next Four Loko by facilitating dangerous levels of drinking among teenagers and college students," Schumer said in a statement.

Breathable Foods says the product is different from the potent beverages. The company says that it's not targeting anyone under 18 and that AeroShot safely delivers caffeine into the mouth, just like coffee does.

A single unit costs $2.99 at convenience stores, mom-and-pops, and liquor and online stores. The product packaging warns people not to consume more than three AeroShots a day.

"When used in accordance with its label, AeroShot provides a safe shot of caffeine and B vitamins for ingestion," the manufacturer says on its website. "Caffeine has been proven to offer a variety of potential benefits for health to individuals when consumed in moderation, from providing energy to enhancing attention and focus."

AeroShot, the flagship product of Cambridge, Mass.-based Breathable Foods, is the product of a conversation that Edwards had with celebrity French chef Thierry Marks over lunch in the summer of 2007.

The first venture Edwards worked on with Harvard students was the breathable chocolate, called Le Whif. Now he's preparing to promote a product called Le Whaf, which involves putting food and drinks in futuristic-looking glass bowls and turning them into low calorie clouds of flavor.

Channel Sales Management Solutions ? Need and Importance ...

Channel Sales Management Solutions ? Need and Importance

Article by Walt Robertson

Channel sales management solutions are getting to be more essential these days due to the status of the economy in the recent years. As a result of economic crisis that the world is experiencing, almost all of the companies are trying to get ahead of their competitors for top level possible way of generating revenue and executing well in the market. In this regard, there has been a rise in the need for channel marketing management services.

Importance of Channel Management

As its name suggests, channel management refers to the organized approach on managing distribution or marketing channels for a particular business. Marketing channels are grouped into three major types, which are the intense, exclusive, and also selective distribution channels. These 3 categories differ in the way the goods or maybe services are distributed to get to its intended clients.

As an example, the rigorous distribution is the type of channel wherein the goods are distributed to any sort of store, plus the stores or outlets aren?t committed to just one product (or even product type) by yourself, like this of a convenience store. Consumer goods such as shampoos and soaps could fit in this category, relying on the preferred channel of the business. Whether the business chooses to be intensively or maybe solely distributed, the right channel sales management solutions ought to be implemented to reach the business goals.

The Best Channel Management Approach

The key goal of the channel sales management solutions is to improve sales revenue for the business, plus this is carried out by cautiously conducting a comprehensive process. The majority of channel marketing management services focus on the complete study of the current market of the goods, so establishing its overall performance in the market. An initial way of measuring it?s performance is its market share, which refers back to the overall performance of the product compared to other products of its type, whether or not it is from the same organization or not.

For instance, a particular cola (Drink A) have a 5% market share; and another carbonated drink (Drink B) from the same manufacturer/company has a 3% market share. To illustrate this, say that there has been a total of one hundred bottles of carbonated drinks sold within a particular period. Amongst these one hundred bottles, 5 are Drink A and also 3 are Drink B. From the 100, 20 bottles of Drink C (from another company) has been sold. This shows that Drink C has a 20% market share and even is carrying out better in the market.

This illustration means that the sales of Drink A and so Drink B are when compared to all carbonated drinks sold in the market (including all of those that are produced by the same company). In this example, the channel sales management solutions may have an approach that elevates the market for the products in an rigorous distribution channel, that can further be improved by making use of channel marketing management services.

Channel Sales Management Solutions

Enhancing the methods of distribution, advertisement, and also management of the products in the market is important to ensure that the sales for the products would maximize ? and so at some point bring sales to the business. If the right channel sales management solutions are employed, the items would surely cost well in the market: and moreover the business would continue to gain more customers over time.

UnitedHealth Group and Fort Bend Independent School District ...

HOUSTON, Feb 16, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) ?
?Participating children can take part in an innovative program that measures
the potential benefits of computer-based gaming, using Xbox(R) Kinect(R), when
combined with a weight-management program

UnitedHealth Group is collaborating with Fort Bend Independent School District
(ISD) on a 12-month program designed to help kids who struggle with extra weight
reach healthier weights and reduce the risk of many related health concerns.

JOIN for ME(SM) ? a first-of-its-kind community based, whole-family program to
fight childhood obesity ? is being offered to more than 30 families in four
Fort Bend ISD elementary schools. The program is offered in conjunction with
Activate for Kids, a school wellness initiative developed by UnitedHealthcare
and United Health Foundation in partnership with Fort Bend ISD.

Children in the Fort Bend JOIN for ME program will also have the option to take
part in an innovative program that measures the potential impact of
computer-based gaming, using Xbox(R) Kinect(R), on physical activity levels and
weight outcomes when combined with a childhood weight management program.

?We are excited about the potential benefits of the JOIN for ME program for our
students,? said Bob Conlon, Ph.D., director of student support services at Fort
Bend ISD. ?Our District School Health Advisory Council has set a goal of
reducing childhood obesity in Fort Bend ISD, and JOIN for ME is a very strong
component of a comprehensive effort to accomplish that goal.

?We know from research that students? health affects their academic performance.

That?s why we need to do all we can to make sure our students make healthy
choices. The partnership with UnitedHealth Group has been so helpful to our
efforts, especially bringing a proven program like JOIN for ME to the district,?
said Conlon.

JOIN for ME engages kids who struggle with extra weight, along with their
parents, in a series of group sessions to help them lose weight through
healthier family food choices, increased activity and lifestyle improvement.

Each session includes group support, learning practical strategies and
implementing change in a family?s everyday life through a program called
?Connect? ?Learn? ?Go!? JOIN for ME emphasizes a combination of whole-family
lifestyle and behavior change delivered in 16 weekly sessions followed by
monthly maintenance sessions for up to a year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about a third of
all children in the United States are obese or overweight, leading to increased
health risks, higher health care costs and decreased parental productivity at
work. In the Houston metropolitan area, more than 36 percent of children ages 6
to 17 are overweight. Within this population, nearly 20 percent are obese.

Obesity in children raises risk factors for heart disease, high cholesterol and
high blood pressure.

?Children who struggle with extra weight are often motivated to change, but they
can?t do it alone. They must have the support and full involvement of their
families to make healthy eating and family-lifestyle choices that include
exercise,? said Deneen Vojta, M.D., senior vice president, UnitedHealth Center
for Health Reform Modernization. ?JOIN for ME is fun and practical, and can
easily be made available to the millions of families who struggle with childhood
obesity. We look forward to supporting the launch of this program in local
communities.?

JOIN for ME, was developed by UnitedHealth Group together with a scientific
advisory board, including Gary Foster from Temple University. In the original
proof-of-concept study, JOIN for ME partnered with the YMCA of the USA and the
YMCA of Greater Providence, R.I. The study demonstrated that the combination of
whole-family engagement helped participants achieve significant reductions in
extra weight. After six months, 84 percent of the 155 participants completed the
full program and achieved, on average, a 3.5-percent reduction in extra weight.

Equally promising is that parents of participants also lost weight in the study,
opening the door for new wellness models that engage the entire family.

UnitedHealth Group is currently working with community-based partners to plan
the national expansion of the program, and several customers have signed on
already, including the State of Texas for its Medicaid program.

About Fort Bend ISD Fort Bend Independent School District is the seventh largest
school district in the state of Texas and is located in Fort Bend County, which
is part of the greater Houston southwest area. With more than 69,000 students on
74 campuses, District teachers and administrators are committed to a holistic
approach in the education of each child. Fort Bend ISD?s mission is to provide
an environment for each student to acquire knowledge, develop skills, and build
character to lead a productive and responsible life. Recently, FBISD was honored
as the only school district in the nation to be named a 2011 National District
of Character. For more information, please visit our website at

FACT SHEET

How JOIN for ME Works

JOIN for ME is a 12-month community-based lifestyle improvement program for
generally healthy children between the ages of 6 and 17 who are overweight or
obese. Children and their families attend a series of 16 weekly, one-hour group
classes at local Ys, workplace facilities or other community locations.

Participants are introduced to evidence-based tools and strategies, as well as
incentives to adopt healthier habits that lead to lifelong healthier weight.

Sessions are led by a trained facilitator and cover topics such as reducing less
healthy foods and drinks, getting and staying active, managing screen time,
improving sleep habits, and understanding the link between moods and foods.

After 16 weeks, participants are encouraged to attend monthly maintenance
sessions for an additional eight months.

The JOIN for ME pilot was designed to provide affordable and accessible care in
local communities, similar to UnitedHealth Group?s efforts to provide access to
the evidence-based Diabetes Prevention Program that was developed from the
National Diabetes Prevention Program curriculum, which helps people with
prediabetes reduce their risk of developing full-blown diabetes. JOIN for ME can
be offered as a workplace wellness program included in a company?s health
benefit package. Different from most workplace wellness initiatives, JOIN for ME
focuses on improving the health of the entire family, underscoring the
importance of social structures in lifestyle modification and behavior change.

The JOIN for ME program is designed to be a covered benefit for participants
enrolled through employer-provided health insurance plans or
government-sponsored Medicaid managed care plans through UnitedHealthcare in
select markets. This means dependents of eligible employees or beneficiaries
will have access to a community-based program to help them achieve healthier
weight, while the employers or plan sponsors will be supporting better health
for participating families, leading to lower health care costs due to fewer
doctor and hospital visits. At-risk children will be identified and referred for
support through multiple channels such as primary care providers, school nurses,
community health centers, school educators and the Y, as well as through
UnitedHealth Group?s database and analytics tools.

JOIN for ME is one of many UnitedHealth Group programs and services that fight
diabetes, prediabetes, obesity and related health problems in creative,
practical ways to help improve health care quality, expand support and coverage,
and help bend the cost curve. Click here for more resources.

Tax records: Santorum rises in wealth since Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rick Santorum grew wealthy over his four years working as a corporate consultant and media commentator after leaving the Senate in 2006, his newly released federal tax returns show. He made more than $3.6 million and drove an Audi luxury sedan ? details that could be at odds with his effort to attract blue-collar voters in the GOP's upcoming presidential primary in Michigan.

Santorum, 53, has presented himself in the Republican primaries as both a social conservative and a Washington outsider, stressing his family's coal-mining background and his appeal to religious and working-class voters. His personal finances detail the trajectory of a politician who became a millionaire, at times by capitalizing on his Beltway connections.

The former Pennsylvania senator's tax returns, released Wednesday night, show that his annual adjusted gross income surged from nearly $660,000 in 2007 to $1.1 million in 2009 before slipping to $923,000 in 2010.

Santorum's 2008 return includes a filing for depreciation of an Audi A luxury sedan, which he drove more than half of his time as a consultant. A year earlier, his 2007 return shows, Santorum took depreciation on a Chevy Trailblazer.

The German model, which had a $42,000 list price in 2008, might not be an easy fit with the candidate's "Made in America" revitalization plan. Santorum has called for "rebuilding the engine that drove America as a world power." His plan would slash taxes on corporations and aim at bringing back millions of dollars in U.S. investment sent abroad.

The revived auto industry is a prime concern in Michigan, where Santorum aims for a Feb. 28 upset of main rival Mitt Romney. Both Santorum and Romney have criticized the Obama administration's handling of the industry's federal bailout. Santorum said in 2009 that he preferred a "structured bankruptcy." The administration has insisted Detroit's automakers would have gone out of business if they had declared bankruptcy because of the faltering national economy.

A Santorum spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Santorum's returns show that his tax payments rose from $167,000 in 2007 to $310,000 in 2009 and then dropped to $263,000 in 2010. He paid a combined tax rate of about 28 percent over the four years. That puts him in the company of many upper middle-class Americans, but not in the 35 percent bracket of the highest wage earners.

His rivals, Romney and Newt Gingrich, also recently released recent income tax returns. Gingrich paid an estimated 31 percent, according to his federal returns, while Romney paid about 14 percent, a lower rate because many of his earnings came from investments taxed at the capital gains rate.

Santorum has called for an overhaul of the federal tax system that would simplify to two brackets ? 10 percent and 28 percent. He has said it would reduce taxes for many Americans, but critics say such a plan would end up aiding wealthy taxpayers more than middle- and low-income earners.

Santorum's wealth doesn't come close to the multimillion-dollar fortune amassed by Romney's high-finance efforts or Gingrich's smaller but still-lucrative blend of foundation and consulting work. But Santorum's newfound affluence reflects his close ties to Washington's business and lobbying circles during his 12 years in the Senate and his smooth transition into their world after he left office.

His 2010 tax returns show he made more than $550,000 in media and consulting fees ? paid to him through a corporation he set up, Excelsior LLC. The previous year, Santorum made more than $820,000 in fees, also paid through the same firm.

Last year, Santorum disclosed investment and real estate assets totaling as much as $2.5 million. In his presidential financial disclosure spanning 18 months between 2010 and 2011, Santorum also listed $1.3 million in income as a consultant ? much of it coming from media appearances and corporate work on behalf of health care, energy and social conservative interests.

Rising to GOP leadership in the Senate as Republican Conference chairman, Santorum pushed to expand the influence of GOP-leaning business interests. As conference chairman, he headed GOP Senate communications efforts and met regularly with GOP-leaning business and lobbying figures. He raised more than $550,000 from lobbyists during his unsuccessful 2006 Senate re-election campaign.

After his Senate defeat, Santorum did not register as a lobbyist, but he aided corporate and other interests as a consultant. He was paid $142,500 by Consol Energy, a Pennsylvania-based energy firm with numerous Appalachian coal mines. The firm has lobbied against Obama administration efforts to tighten limits on greenhouse gas emissions.

Santorum also was paid $65,000 by the American Continental Group, a D.C. lobbying firm with an assortment of corporate clients, and $125,000 by the Clapham Group, a Virginia firm that aids religious rights organizations. He benefited from media work, earning $230,000 for appearances on Fox News and more than $80,000 for stints as a radio commentator.

Santorum was also paid nearly $400,000 in compensation and stock options as a board director at Universal Health Services, a hospital management firm, after he left the Senate in 2006. He also owns up to $250,000 in Universal stock. As a senator, Santorum had sponsored several unsuccessful bills that would have secured more Medicaid funding for hospitals run by Universal and other medical firms in Puerto Rico.

Santorum owns five rental properties in State College, Pa., worth between $500,000 and $1.25 million, but also with as much as $750,000 in mortgage debt, according to his presidential disclosure. His taxes show that he took mortgage and depreciation deductions on those properties, and also that he sold more than $23,000 worth of stocks in 2010.

Santorum and his wife, Karen, took standard deductions each year for their seven children, the returns show. In 2007, the Santorums took a $4,000 charity deduction for giving away "clothing, footwear, accessories and household items." They live in a four-bedroom northern Virginia house on five acres assessed at $1.4 million in 2010.
