The food cart revolution is going all electric, at least in Europe, thanks to a company that sells greener versions of the three-wheeled street vehicles commonly seen in Asia known as tuk tuks and rickshaws.
This should come as good news to eco-conscious hipsters stumbling out of bars with a belly full of organic brew in search of a bready treat to soak up some of the suds.
The food cart is made by the Netherlands-based Tuk Tuk Factory, which has been selling electric-powered versions of the three-wheeled vehicles to ferry around passengers and cargo.
The e-Tuk Vendo, released last week, is a food cart similar to those vying for an ever-increasing share of business on city?streets from New York to Portland. Only, the Vendo is all electric, powered by a lead-acid battery that charges in 10 hours, and has a range of about 40 miles.?
The battery provides enough charge to keep the onboard refrigerator humming along while in transit, but the cart should be plugged in when it reaches its destination, according to Gizmag, adding:
Not only will this keep its fridge, water pumps and other systems from killing the battery, but it will also allow the battery to recharge. An optional roof-mounted solar panel will help in that department.
Top speed is 31 miles per hour, fast enough to cruise city streets looking for a spot and sell food, but not suited for freeway driving. The cost is ?24,000, which is roughly $32,000, not that you will be able to buy one in the U.S. for now.
