U.S. Military Destroys Targets in History-Making Missile Test

Last Updated: 10/26/2012*

Raytheon missiles, radars and other systems played critical roles in the U.S. Missile Defense Agency's largest live-fire missile defense test in history today. Referred to as Flight Test Integrated-01 (FTI-01), the test near the Kwajalein Atoll simulated an all-out missile attack.

?This is the most sophisticated test of our ballistic missile defense capabilities ever attempted,? said Tom Kennedy, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems president. ?Raytheon?s radars, missiles and integrated systems are an indispensable part of our nation?s missile defense architecture.?

During the test, Raytheon?s AN/TPY-2 X band radar detected a medium range ballistic missile target and provided cues to the THAAD weapon, enabling a successful intercept. Raytheon?s Patriot system detected, tracked and successfully intercepted a short range ballistic missile target with a PAC-3 interceptor and a low flying cruise missile target over water . The company?s Standard Missile-2 was fired from the USS FITZGERALD and engaged a low-flying cruise missile. A Raytheon Standard Missile-3 also participated in the test.

About Patriot
Patriot is the world?s most capable air and missile defense system, protecting against a full range of advanced threats, including aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.? It is owned and operated by 12 nations around the globe. Raytheon is both the prime contractor for domestic and international Patriot Air and Missile Defense Systems and the system integrator for Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missiles.

About AN/TPY-2
Playing a vital role in missile defense, AN/TPY-2 is a mobile X-band phased-array radar. The radar searches, acquires and tracks threat ballistic missiles, and is sophisticated enough to discriminate between threats and non-threats such as decoys.
?
In forward based mode, AN/TPY-2 detects and tracks an enemy ballistic missile starting at boost (ascent) phase of flight, which is shortly after the missile is launched.

In terminal mode, AN/TPY-2 serves as the search, track, discrimination and fire control radar for the THAAD weapon system. Forward-based AN/TPY-2?s in Japan, Israel and Turkey are currently enabling the protection of the U.S., deployed troops, and the U.S.?s friends and? allies from the growing threat of short-, medium- and long-range missiles.

About Standard Missile-2
The tried-and-true SM-2 is renowned for its role as the U.S. Navy?s primary, medium-range area air defense weapon. SM-2 is also the primary air defense weapon for eight allied navies. It protects ships by providing defense against advanced high- and low-altitude anti-ship missile threats.

About Standard Missile-3
Launched from U.S. and Japan navy cruisers and destroyers equipped with the Aegis ballistic missile defense weapon system, SM-3s destroy incoming ballistic missile threats in space by colliding with them. Often described as ?hitting a bullet with a bullet,? the collision in space is similar to the impact between two 10-ton trucks both traveling at 600 mph.?

Love Is A Drug: Here's How To Kick The Addiction [INFOGRAPHIC ...

heartbreak
This is your brain "on" love.

Falling in love can feel like getting high, and a split can be like withdrawal. Here's how to cope.

Think you might be addicted to love? It turns out everyone is to some degree?? biologically speaking, of course. The brain is hardwired to recognize amorous feelings as a reward, just as it does when introduced to potentially addictive substances ? hence, the euphoria. Likewise, your brain doesn't want to let love go, and physically withdraws when love is taken away. In other words, love hurts...literally.

Life of Pi - Movie Review (Spoilers)

Ang Lee's cinematic adaptation of the critically acclaimed novel Life of Pi?is a gloriously magnificent work of art. Shot in 3D, the film takes full advantage of the technology to bring to life the colorful world of India and the Pacific Ocean where the film's protagonist, Pi (portrayed by newcomer Suraj Sharma) finds himself trapped after enduring a shipwreck.?

There are several moments in the film where the cinematography greatly enhances the fantasy-like environment Pi finds himself in. The use of vibrant colors throughout the movie creates a dream-like state that wows on many levels. One notable sequence is a scene at night when Pi sees a school of glowing jellyfish in the ocean, as the neon glow of the jellyfish illuminates a large humpback whale that leaps over his head. The scene uses a carefully measured amount of visual effects to allow the viewer's eye to question whether or not the sequence is based in reality or in Pi's imagination.?

Another element that deserves praise is the marvelous Richard Parker, the Bengal Tiger that Pi finds himself stuck with on the lifeboat out at sea. The CGI animal is so intricately designed it looks and feels real, and its ravishing color contrasts the various shades of blue from the sky and sea, generating a visual feast for the eye.?

Suraj Sharma, who makes his acting debut in this movie, gives a splendid performance. The hopes and fears of Pi is brilliantly captured in his acting. Sharma manages to create a character that remains grounded in reality despite the bizarre happenings around him. All in all, Ang Lee has created a masterful work of art in Life of Pi, which is visually pleasing and full of heart. ?

'Two and a Half Men' actor calls his show 'filth'

NEW YORK (AP) ? The teenage actor who plays the half in the hit CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men" says in a video posted online by a Christian church that the show is "filth" and that viewers shouldn't watch it.

Nineteen-year-old Angus T. Jones has been on the show, which used to feature bad-boy actor Charlie Sheen and remains heavy with sexual innuendo, since he was 10 but says he doesn't want to be on it anymore.

"Please stop watching it," Jones said. "Please stop filling your head with filth."

Jones plays Jake, the son of Jon Cryer's uptight divorced chiropractor character, Alan, and the nephew of Sheen's hedonistic philandering music jingle writer character, Charlie. Sheen, who has publicly criticized CBS, was fired and replaced by Ashton Kutcher, who plays billionaire Walden.

In the video posted by the Forerunner Christian Church in Fremont, Calif., Jones describes a search for a spiritual home. He says the type of entertainment he's involved in adversely affects the brain and "there's no playing around when it comes to eternity."

"You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that," he said. "I know I can't. I'm not OK with what I'm learning, what the Bible says, and being on that television show."

Show producer Warner Bros. Television had no comment Monday. CBS didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

"Two and a Half Men" survived a wild publicity ride less than two years ago, when Sheen was fired for his drug use and publicly complained about the network and the show's creator, Chuck Lorre. Sheen later said he wasn't still angry at the sitcom's producers and the network and acknowledged he would have fired himself had he been in their shoes.

The show was moved from Monday to Thursday this season, and its average viewership has dropped from 20 million an episode to 14.5 million, although last year's numbers were somewhat inflated by the intense interest in Kutcher's debut. It is the third most popular comedy on television behind CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" and ABC's "Modern Family."

Pacers Beat Lakers 79-77: George Hill Hits Game-Winner With 0.1 Seconds Left (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES ? Kobe Bryant is often at his most dangerous when he's fighting the flu, and the ailing superstar carried the Los Angeles Lakers to the brink of yet another under-the-weather win.

One dramatic shot by George Hill left the Indiana Pacers feeling a whole lot healthier.

Hill's high-arching shot banked in over Dwight Howard with 0.1 seconds left, and the Pacers withstood Bryant's 40-point performance and the Lakers' last-minute rally for a 79-77 victory over Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Hill scored 19 points for the Pacers, who benefited enormously from the Lakers' 23-for-43 performance at the free throw line. Indiana led for most of the night, but couldn't put it away until Hill took charge on a pick-and-roll play with David West, dribbling past Pau Gasol and delicately lofting the ball over the shot-blocking Howard.

"It's something you always dream about, to hit game-winners," Hill said. "So to do that and help this team win a game just makes it that much better."

Coughing and wheezing on the court and in the locker room, Bryant still hit a tying 3-pointer with 24.5 seconds left and produced the 114th 40-point game of his career.

"It was just a tough game for us, because we didn't make shots," Bryant said. "On top of that, we didn't make free throws. I've got to minimize my mistakes. Ten turnovers is way too many for me, so I have to work on perfecting that and bringing that down. I just felt like I played to the crowd too much."

The Lakers dropped to 2-3 under new coach Mike D'Antoni. They mostly played the way Bryant felt, flirting with the lowest-scoring game and worst shooting percentage in franchise history before finishing with 31.6 percent shooting and surpassing the club low of 70 points in a game with eight consecutive points in the waning minutes.

Los Angeles tied it at 74 on Howard's dunk with 1:56 to play. After West made one free throw, Howard and Metta World Peace combined to miss four straight free throws. After Hill made a running shot, Bryant hit a 3-pointer in front of the Lakers' bench to tie it ? but Hill dribbled down the clock and won it for Indiana.

"I'm a little bit proud of the guys, the way they fought and had a chance to win, which defies statistical logic," D'Antoni said. "That was not nice. That was tough."

The Pacers' sturdy defense stifled the Lakers' up-tempo offense for most of the night, turning the game into an ugly grind before the thrilling finish. Indiana won its third straight road game over the Lakers after losing its first 11 regular-season meetings after Staples Center opened in 1999.

West scored 16 points and Paul George had 12 in the opener of a four-game road trip for the Pacers, who had lost six of eight away from home to start the season.

"We need road wins to build our togetherness, our belief in ourselves and our new identity, and to build confidence," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "This is a big one, and one that we were looking for."

Before outscoring the rest of his team combined, Bryant missed the Lakers' morning shootaround when he fell ill. He spent the day in bed, drinking fluids and listening to Bob Marley, before giving another high-scoring performance, albeit with 10 turnovers and 12-for-28 shooting.

Howard blocked four shots and scored 17 points despite 3-of-12 shooting at the free throw line.

"It shouldn't have got to that point," Howard said. "It's been a tough stretch for us early in the season. We can't lose our faith. We'll find a rhythm and we'll get in a groove, but we can't let what we're going through get us down right now."

The Lakers returned from a three-game trip for a three-game homestand, their final multigame stretch at home before Christmas. After playing six games in a nine-day stretch earlier this month, the Lakers are clearly running near empty ? and they had little to give in the first half against Indiana.

The Pacers jumped to an early lead and hung onto it despite falling into a 1-for-23 shooting slump in the first half, playing more than 12 minutes with just one field goal. The Lakers couldn't take advantage, missing 14 of their 18 shots in the second quarter and repeatedly failing to move the ball at D'Antoni's preferred pace.

Bryant made five of his first six shots, but fell into a 1-for-10 slump before getting rolling again late in the third quarter while Los Angeles made a 13-2 run. Bryant had nine turnovers in the first three quarters, but also had 29 points ? more than his teammates' combined 28.

NOTES: The Pacers stay in California to face Sacramento and Golden State before stopping in Chicago on the way home from their trip. ... The Lakers handed out bobblehead dolls in the likeness of the late Chick Hearn, their beloved broadcaster who would have turned 96 on Tuesday. ... Ashton Kutcher, David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Kaley Cuoco, Gene Simmons, Shannon Tweed and Tenacious D band members Jack Black and Kyle Gass watched from courtside.

Down but not out: Looking for a job is my full-time job

"It wasn't supposed to be this way," Derek Ciapala says.

In October 2009, he had just married. He recently moved to Cincinnati as a part of a job transfer within his financial services company. He and his wife, Jenn, were enthusiastic about their new life together. But soon "something wasn't right" at work, he says, and over a couple years, employees who left weren't replaced.

"That's never a good sign," he says.

It wasn't. On Jan. 7, he was laid off alongside 90 percent of his department. He'd worked for the company since February 2008, most recently as a mutual-fund specialist.

At 34, he found that new life?just not the one he planned for.

Family income plummeted immediately by $35,000. State unemployment benefits (as little as $121 and as much as $305 a week) were tough to rely on. Savings accounts are constantly bare, whittled to $300 by the middle of summer. He says they now count every proverbial penny.

Ciapala is a U.S. Navy veteran, and he considered returning to the military, but he hesitates to abandon the life he and Jenn built in Ohio. After nearly a year of unemployment, he's a month from earning his teaching license from Xavier University, and hopes he can find work in education.

Still, he acknowledges there's uncertainty and concedes life may swerve again.

"[T]hat might be what happens if the American economy doesn't turn around soon," Ciapala says in a first-person account he wrote for Yahoo News about his situation. "There's no guarantee that I will find a teaching job for next year, and I may be forced to make another life-changing decision to provide for my family.

"[Barack Obama's] re-election should have been a moment of celebration, based on his original platform of hope and change, but that's not what I'm feeling. I'm concerned and even a little scared. Maybe I'm wrong. Actually, I hope that I'm wrong. Maybe everything will be all right in four years. I guess we'll find out soon enough," Ciapala says.

It wasn't supposed to be this way for many of us?12.3 million who are jobless, especially the 5 million who are considered long-term unemployed because they haven't worked in more than 27 weeks. We can unearth a bevy of statistics to tell their stories (7.9 percent are still without a job, and 2 million will lose benefits should the country fall off the "fiscal cliff," etc.) but it's personal anecdotes that spotlight what unemployment is truly like.

Ciapala is one jobless worker of many who shared their unemployment stories?written in their own words?with Yahoo News last week. We asked for a snapshot of their lives, but we also wanted to know how they perceive the slow-growing job market against the backdrop of President Obama's re-election: Are job-hunters hopeful? Do they believe the nation is turning a corner? Or are they increasingly worried the country is mired in some jobless netherworld?

In this most recent installment of Down But Not Out, our occasional series on a sour economy, dozens of readers contributed their own accounts. And because joblessness targets such a wide coterie of Americans, we heard from all perspectives: recent college graduates, Baby Boomers, single moms, disabled veterans and the very sick. And, for sure, there are countless "underemployed" workers?those scraping by on part-time or low-wage gigs?and we've published their thoughts, too.

[Related: Previously in Down But Not Out: Voices of the long-term unemployed, Underwater mortgage crisis in photos and 'Student loans have basically ruined my life']

Below are a couple more workers' anecdotes, and you can find all the stories we published as part of this series here. If you're interested in sharing your story of long-term unemployment and your job search, sign up with Yahoo! Contributor Network.

When CJ Duran walks into a store and sees employees working, she looks at them in awe: They have jobs. They're useful. They're self-dependent. They're earning money every day.

She wonders: "What do they have that I don't?"

At 44, she didn't believe a 12-year hiatus from full-time employment to raise her kids would prevent her from securing a job?any job, really. Now forced back onto the job trail, she's tried everything: part-time, full-time, clerical, food service, and retail. She's had no success. She applies to about 28 jobs a week.

"For the past two years," she writes in her story, "looking for a job has been my full-time job."

Duran did find retail work, but it required a 35-mile commute. Soon, her hourly wage of $7.50 didn't jibe financially with $3.25-a-gallon gasoline. "So, I quit, and started looking for jobs closer to home."

By 2012, she'd endured a somewhat Job-like existence: four blood transfusions and a hospital stay that topped $3,000, a $3,000 vet bill, a divorce, personal bankruptcy, foreclosure and a short-sale of her family's house.

Add in joblessness and Duran, a former administrative assistant in Tracy, Calif., dubs her life "desperate."

"I'm still jobless and the holidays are coming fast. I've had some pretty close calls to being completely broke," she says. "I've always believed if you want something bad enough, you do what it takes to get it. I thought I was, but it seems that persistence and motivation are not enough. So what's my problem?"

But hope lingers:? "When depressing or negative thoughts start to come into my head, I always tell myself that as long as I keep going, I will get a job. Every single morning, I tell myself "I am going to get an interview today!" And I do believe it. I have to."

Five more years of unemployment wasn't part of Karen DeSimone's plan when she moved from Detroit to Southern California in early 2008.

Not when she's earning $1 to $4 an hour as a seven-day-a-week on-call assistant for a real-estate agent. Not when she depleted her savings and 401(k) to the tune of $60,000 and $50,000, respectively. Not when she's resorted to soliciting for work, door-to-door, in business parks.

Once earning $60,000 in the automotive industry, DeSimone, 56, moved to Rancho Cucamonga after a six-month fruitless job hunt in Michigan.

"After I was laid off, I thought, 'I will simply find a new job!' Wrong," DeSimone says.

Five years later: nearly zilch on the job front.

She has nonetheless stayed focused, joining the local Chamber of Commerce and working for months for no pay for small-business entrepreneurs just to network and meet people. She still searches weekly for jobs but admits her expectations have changed, saying, "I'm a very optimistic, positive person, but when reality sets in, you count your blessings and try to move on."

She says the recent collective good news for job-seekers is only good for those who are actually finding work: "Every time upbeat unemployment statistics are released, I cringe; so many more of us are still seeking work."

DeSimone would accept $8 to $10 an hour?"anywhere!" she emphasizes?to get a foot in the door.

"I have not given up," she says. "I can't."
