When you surf, the ultimate goal is to get into a pipeline where the water circles around you and that's all there is. In writing, it's the same thing. You want to get into this pipeline where the story is circling around you and that's all there is. That is writing nirvana to me.
Michael Connelly, American author, (1956 - )

Everything in writing begins with language. Language begins with listening.
Jeanette Winterson, British writer (1959 - )

The most difficult part of writing a book is not devising a plot which will captivate the reader. It's not developing characters the reader will have strong feelings for or against. It is not finding a setting which will take the reader to a place he or she as never been. It is not the research, whether in fiction or non-fiction. Petronas of Malaysia, UOP to Cooperate on Gas ... - LNG World News

Petronas of Malaysia, UOP to Cooperate on Gas Processing Technology

UOP, a Honeywell company, announced that it will collaborate with Malaysia?s national oil and gas company, Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), on natural gas processing technology.

The joint development program is focused on technology to overcome challenges faced by producers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), as they seek to monetize natural gas more economically by moving gas processing from onshore facilities to ships that will moor closer to offshore gas fields.

The program will center on advanced carbon dioxide (CO(2)) absorption technology to improve the reliability of equipment used to remove contaminants from natural gas before it is liquefied, while also reducing the weight and footprint of the equipment onboard ships. Technical improvements developed to better meet LNG specifications may also be deployed in the next generation of onshore and offshore gas processing equipment.

?The joint program with PETRONAS is another example of how UOP is committed to developing gas processing innovations to meet the growing global demand for natural gas, especially in Southeast Asia,? said Rebecca Liebert, vice president and general manager for the Gas Processing and Hydrogen unit of Honeywell?s UOP. ?We look forward to a successful joint effort with PETRONAS, a recognized leader in natural gas in Asia.?

PETRONAS is a fully integrated oil and gas company and its Gas & Power Business is engaged in the processing, liquefaction, transmission, marketing and trading of natural gas and LNG.

As part of the joint program, PETRONAS and UOP scientists will work on designs for next-generation equipment to overcome challenges posed by gas treatment onboard ships, and the two companies will design and build a land-based pilot plant to demonstrate the technology.

Natural gas is the world?s fastest-growing fossil fuel, with annual consumption expected to reach 160 trillion cubic feet by 2035. Nearly 35 percent of the world?s demand growth for natural gas during that time will come from Asia, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Producers are increasingly seeking new technology for liquefying natural gas, which is needed to transport natural gas by ship to regions that cannot be served by domestic production or pipelines. Natural gas extracted from wells often contains a variety of contaminants at levels that must be removed before the gas can be liquefied, stored or transported.

Honeywell?s UOP offers technology, equipment and materials to extract contaminants such as CO(2), hydrogen sulfide, mercury and water prior to liquefaction, or remove trace sulfur compounds from the feed gas to create cleaner-burning natural gas. Honeywell?s UOP has developed solutions for more than 3,600 individual process units for gas processing in a broad range of applications, including new applications such as Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels that recover oil and natural gas from offshore wells.

Honeywell?s UOP has increased business activities in Southeast Asia during the past five years. In June 2008, it established a gas processing design center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that designs and delivers fabricated skid-mounted gas processing plants. In May 2012, it opened a manufacturing and operations center in Penang, Malaysia, to produce natural gas purification membrane elements.

3-d time-lapse imaging captures twisted root mechanics for first time

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Using an advanced 3-D time-lapse imaging system, a group of physicists and plant biologists from Cornell University and the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research have discovered how certain plant roots exhibit powerful mechanical abilities while navigating their environment.

The research, published in this week's online Early Edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could eventually assist in breeding crop plants optimized for growth in areas where climate change or over farming has led to difficult soil conditions.

The researchers grew Medicago truncatula plants in a transparent gel consisting of two layers -- a soft, top layer and a stiff, lower layer. The roots grew straight down until reaching the lower layer, where they began to twist and buckle into spring-like shapes, much like a string begins to curl if it's continuously twisted in one direction.

Combining 3-D movies with measurements and mathematical modeling, the research sheds new light on root growth revealing the role mechanics plays in determining the root shapes. Ultimately, this led to a previously unknown connection between root geometry, growth, and force generation.

"When the roots hit the stiff barrier, growth causes them to buckle like a wire or rod that's been compressed. But by twisting, the buckled roots become helical, allowing the root to push off more gel and get more force at the tip," said Jesse Silverberg, a Cornell graduate student in the Department of Physics and lead researcher for the study.

"Suppose the plant is growing along and finds itself stuck at a layer of clay or tough clump of soil. The root needs an extra force to push through these barriers, and the mathematical model tells us how large of a helix the root needs to grow to do just that. Roughly, the stiffer the barrier, the larger the helix," said Silverberg. The researchers also used the 3-D technology to discover that 74 percent of the plant roots twisted in a counter-clockwise manner. Silverberg says further research may reveal similar behavior in other plant species.

Exotic Animal Owners Aren't Registering Pets with the State

Posted by Kyle Swenson on Mon, Sep 24, 2012 at 4:01 PM

As we all know, despite a historically bad economy and record unemployment, one of the most high-profile issues tackled during the last legislative session was what to do with the exotic pets some Ohioans like to keep around the house. As sarcastic as that sentence can read, there were actually pretty compelling reasons to address the topic.

After some legislative mud wrestling down in Columbus, lawmakers passed a law that, among other things, requires exotic animal owners to register their special friends with the state. The needed info includes the location of the animals, the number, and the info on who tends to their health needs. The registration window opened on September 5th, and owners are required to have their animals street legal by November.

Unfortunately, pet owners aren't getting the message. According to the Sandusky Register:

Only one person has registered since the law took effect on Sept. 5, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Three others tried, but turned in incomplete forms. Their animals also didn't have a required microchip with identification implanted in them.

Now, the reason for this lack of participation might not actually stem from the fact that a person inclined to own an exotic animal probably isn't the type to keep an unobstructed channel open to general society, or at least into fine-print requests of government bureaucracies. Rather, the Ohio Association of Animal Owners, a group opposed to the legislation and running 8,000 strong, is considering a legal challenge.

University looks to donors to help erase deficit, tuition

The national conversation surrounding the United States? 13 trillion dollar debt has turned the population into a swarm of economists with their own opinions about how to handle the budget.

But here at DePauw, those same problems with balancing the budget sheet also exist.

DePauw reported an unrestricted operating deficit of $4.8 million at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year. A number Brad Kelsheimer, vice-president of finance and administration, said is large in comparison to DePauw?s peer institutions.

DePauw has an operating budget around $85 million a year that is funded through a number of resources such as tuition, endowment draw and donations. A deficit means that at the end of the year, DePauw is reporting a loss of revenue spent and revenue earned.

A number of different factors play into the costs and revenue of the university. In ?08-?09, when the deficit reached its highest ever at $12.6 million, a national recession stunted market growth as well as made potential donors think twice about giving gifts. That raises costs which in the end raises the deficit.

Kelsheimer stressed that deficit is not a ?cash flow? problem and that DePauw is ?paying its bills.? He said that the problem is only alarming in that it is not sustainable year after year. The major concern of the deficit for Kelsheimer is that it means depreciation costs are not being met and the physical DePauw ? the academic equipment, the actual buildings, the campus ? is not being invested in.

?We?re not in this to make money,? Kelsheimer said. ?But there has to be a financial model that works.?

Kelsheimer said that while the deficit is high compared to similar universities, DePauw does have a significant advantage in that has a ?strong balance sheet? ?? meaning it has the potential donors and resources to cover the deficit.

The university has been able to cut controllable costs, but raising revenue, as opposed to spending less and less, is the intended plan.

That means donations and that is where Jason Petrovich and the advancement office come in. Petrovich was recently named interim vice president of advancement ? to go along with an executive director of development title ? after former VP Marcia Latta announced she would be leaving her position at the end of the calendar year for family reasons. Petrovich has taken more responsibility in running the university?s massive comprehensive campaign. The campaign, currently in the quiet phase, will be charged with raising money through donors to fund the capital projects on campus as well as collect assets to erase the university?s budget deficit.

Petrovich explained that the single biggest part of campaign is to raise money for student scholarships. The idea is the university can focus funds in other areas as it handles less of the actual cost of supporting students. The money covered by the campaign can also go into the endowment. A healthy endowment means a strong percentage can be pulled from year to year and less of a financial burden is placed on students. Kelsheimer said DePauw?s current endowment is $485 million and that we are currently pulling 5.5 percent of it yearly.

Petrovich expects to see ?sustained growth? in DePauw?s annual giving program. Last year, the annual giving program, which consists of the annual fund, the tiger club and the faculty and staff campaign, collected $5.4 million.

Kelsheimer is confident in the administration?s financial plan the university?s ?loyal? donors. He said if DePauw can continue to increase revenue sources, the administration?s current financial model has the university operating with a budget surplus by 2017.

?It?s only a reason for concern if we didn?t have a plan to get out of it,? Kelsheimer said.

Novel approach for single molecule electronic DNA sequencing

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? DNA sequencing is the driving force behind key discoveries in medicine and biology. For instance, the complete sequence of an individual's genome provides important markers and guidelines for medical diagnostics and healthcare. Up to now, the major roadblock has been the cost and speed of obtaining highly accurate DNA sequences. While numerous advances have been made in the last 10 years, most current high-throughput sequencing instruments depend on optical techniques for the detection of the four building blocks of DNA: A, C, G and T. To further advance the measurement capability, electronic DNA sequencing of an ensemble of DNA templates has also been developed.

Recently, it has been shown that DNA can be threaded through protein nanoscale pores under an applied electric current to produce electronic signals at single molecule level. However, because the four nucleotides are very similar in their chemical structures, they cannot easily be distinguished using this technique. Thus, the research and development of a single-molecule electronic DNA sequencing platform is the most active area of investigation and has the potential to produce a hand-held DNA sequencer capable of deciphering the genome for personalized medicine and basic biomedical research.

A team of researchers at Columbia University, headed by Dr. Jingyue Ju (the Samuel Ruben-Peter G. Viele Professor of Engineering, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Pharmacology, Director of the Center for Genome Technology and Biomolecular Engineering), with colleagues at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) led by Dr. John Kasianowicz (Fellow of the American Physical Society), have developed a novel approach to potentially sequence DNA in nanopores electronically at single molecule level with single-base resolution. This work, entitled "PEG-Labeled Nucleotides and Nanopore Detection for Single Molecule DNA Sequencing by Synthesis" is now available in the open access online journal Scientific Reports, from Nature Publishing Group.

The reported nanopore-based sequencing by synthesis (Nano-SBS) strategy can accurately distinguish four DNA bases by detecting 4 different sized tags released from 5'-phosphate-modified nucleotides at the single molecule level for sequence determination. The basic principle of the Nano-SBS strategy is described as follows. As each nucleotide analog is incorporated into the growing DNA strand during the polymerase reaction, its tag is released by phosphodiester bond formation. The tags will enter a nanopore in the order of their release, producing unique ionic current blockade signatures due to their distinct chemical structures, thereby determining DNA sequence electronically at single molecule level with single base resolution.

As proof-of-principle, the research team attached four different length polymer tags to the terminal phosphate of 2'-deoxyguanosine-5'-tetraphosphate (a modified DNA building block) and demonstrated efficient incorporation of the nucleotide analogs during the polymerase reaction, as well as better than baseline discrimination among the four tags at single molecule level based on their nanopore ionic current blockade signatures. This approach coupled with polymerase attached to the nanopores in an array format should yield a single-molecule electronic Nano-SBS platform.

In previous work, the Center of Genome Technology & Biomolecular Engineering at Columbia University, led by Professor Ju and Dr. Nicholas J. Turro (William P. Schweitzer Professor of Chemistry), developed a four-color DNA sequencing by synthesis (SBS) platform using cleavable fluorescent nucleotide reversible terminators (NRT), which is licensed to Intelligent Bio-Systems, Inc., a QIAGEN company. SBS with cleavable fluorescent NRTs is the dominant approach used in the next generation DNA sequencing systems. Dr. Kasianowicz and his group at NIST pioneered the investigation of nanopores for single molecule analysis. They previously reported that different length polymers, polyethylene glycols (PEGs), could be distinguished by their unique effects on current readings in a ?-hemolysin protein nanopores at single molecule level and subsequently developed a theory for the method. Their results provide the proof-of-concept for single molecule mass spectrometry. The combination of the SBS concept with the distinct nanopore-detectable electronic tags to label DNA building blocks led to the development of the single-molecule electronic Nano-SBS approach described the current Scientific Reports article (09/21/2012).

As lead author Dr. Shiv Kumar points out, "The novelty of our approach lies in the design and use of four differently tagged nucleotides, which upon incorporation by DNA polymerase, release four different size tags that are distinguished from each other at the single molecule level when they pass through the nanopore. This approach overcomes any constraints imposed by the small differences among the four nucleotides, a challenge which most nanopore sequencing methods have faced for decades." Moreover, the technique is quite flexible; with PEG tags as prototypes, other chemical tags can be chosen to provide optimal separation in different nanopore systems.

With further development of this Nano-SBS approach, such as the use of large arrays of protein or solid nanopores, this system has the potential to accurately sequence an entire human genome rapidly and at low cost, thereby enabling it to be used in routine medical diagnoses.

The authors of the Scientific Reports article were Shiv Kumar, Chuanjuan Tao, Minchen Chien, Brittney Hellner, Arvind Balijepalli, Joseph W.F. Robertson, Zengmin Li, James J. Russo, Joseph E. Reiner, John J. Kasianowicz, and Jingyue Ju. The study was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, a National Research Council/NIST/NIH Research Fellowship, and a grant from the NIST Office of Law Enforcement Standards.

UK regulator finds BSkyB 'fit and proper'

(AP) ? British Sky Broadcasting is a "fit and proper" company to hold an operating license, U.K. regulators said Thursday in response to the phone hacking scandal that engulfed the parent company. But it criticized the former CEO and chairman, James Murdoch, for poor management.

The company's license was called into question because of the scandal at a newspaper owned by News Corp., which effectively controls BSkyB through a 39 percent shareholding.

If the company had not be found "fit and proper" it could have been stripped of the license that yielded a net profit of $1.4 billion in the year ending June 30.

The Office of Communications, known as Ofcom, concluded that James Murdoch was not complicit in a cover up at the tabloid News of the World, but his failure to initiate appropriate action on a number of occasions was "difficult to comprehend and ill-judged."

The report also found no evidence that Rupert Murdoch, James' father and CEO of News Corp., "acted in a way that was inappropriate in relation to phone hacking, concealment or corruption by employees" of his British newspapers.

Though Ofcom said it might review the situation if there are further revelations, the decision removed any immediate threat of BSkyB losing its license. The company's shares were up 0.9 percent at 733.5 pence in late morning trading in London.

"After a lengthy review process, we are pleased that Ofcom has now reached its conclusion and we look forward to continuing to develop our business for the benefit of customers and shareholders alike," BSkyB said in a statement.

News Corp. also welcomed the regulator's decision but contended that some statements about James Murdoch were "not substantiated by evidence."

James Murdoch became executive chairman of News Group Newspapers ? publisher of The Sun and the now-defunct News of the World ? and its parent company News International ? which also owns The Times newspapers ? in January 2008 and held the position until February this year. Both companies are ultimately owned by News Corp.

The phone hacking scandal, along with other allegations, has spawned investigations by a Parliamentary committee, a formal inquiry led by a judge, criminal charges against some journalists ? including Rebekah Brooks, former chief executive of News International ? and civil suits which forced the company to pay large settlements.

Public outrage following reports that the phone of a young murder victim had been hacked also led to News Corp. deciding two years ago to drop its bid to take full control of BSkyB.

Ofcom noted contradictory evidence by James Murdoch and two former senior employees about when Murdoch became aware that phone hacking at the News of the World went far beyond the company's long-standing claim that it involved a single rogue reporter and a private detective.

However, it said there was no evidence that he knew of "widespread wrongdoing or criminality" at News of the World.

The regulator limited itself to criticizing James Murdoch's actions as company director.

"We consider James Murdoch's conduct, including his failure to initiate action on his own account on a number of occasions, to be both difficult to comprehend and ill-judged."

Since February, James Murdoch has been a non-executive director of the company, and one of only four people on the 12-member board with connections to News Corp.

In May, the House of Commons' Culture, Media and Sport Committee concluded that Rupert Murdoch was "not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company." That conclusion, on a partisan split of 6-4, had no practical effect, however.

In its statement, News Corp. said it was pleased that Ofcom found that evidence related to misdeeds at the newspapers "does not provide any basis to conclude that News Corp. and Rupert Murdoch acted in a way that was inappropriate, and that there is similarly no evidence that James Murdoch deliberately engaged in any wrongdoing."

"We disagree, however, with certain of the report's statements about James Murdoch's prior actions as an executive and Director, which are not at all substantiated by evidence," News Corp. said.

LG Intuition review

Android Central

LG has forever been known as that "other Android manufacturer", relegated to fourth place behind Samsung, HTC, and Motorola in consumers' minds. With its recent lineup arriving on US shores, though, the Korean manufacturer is hoping the tides will turn. Not only is it lying in wait with its beastly Optimus G to steal the spotlight from competing flagships, LG is also venturing into niche territory, including the increasingly popular "phablet" market.

The Intuition is both a phone and a tablet, a wild-looking device unlike anything Android has ever run on. But does it succeed at striking a balance between functionality and versatility? In no uncertain terms, creating a device that succeeds on two different levels is a daunting task. And while LG has made a valiant effort, consumers are going to walk away either smitten with the Intuition's originality or disgusted with its impracticality.

The Good

The Intuition has a radical design, and LG makes no apologies for stepping outside of the box with this one. The Intuition's display is impressive, and performance is snappy and powerful. Call quality is as good as we've come to expect on Big Red.

The Bad

Those who hate the Intuition's design will outnumber those who love it. Unfortunately, this hybrid device fails as a tablet as well as phone-- it's too small and boxy for multimedia viewing, and too big and sharp for messaging and phone calls. Forget using this device with one hand, it's absolutely impossible.

Conclusion

The Intuition is a polarizing device, and you're either going to love it or hate it. If you fall somewhere in the middle, you'll realize it has a great display, fast performance, and a visually-pleasing Ice Cream Sandwich experience. You'll also realize it should be kept in the niche category, as its functionality as a tablet is limited by poor software and stylus, and its phone functionality suffers from impossible one-handed operation.

TrackBack - Dr Davis' Back & Wrist Pain Blog

Jayna faceThe obesity epidemic is skyrocketing. According to an article in USA TODAY 9/18/12 (Obesity On The Rise) on the front page, the Center for Disease Control puts the obesity rate on track to be 50% of all Americans in 2030. In 2010 it was 35%. Heck, right now almost 70% are overweight or obese...I guess it will be 80% plus by then.

Of particular concern to me (I have a 7 year old daughter) is the rapidly climbing childhood obesity rate, and there may be more to it than just poor food choices and sedentary lifestyles. A recent study links BPA to obesity in children. Here is an excerpt from an article (also in USA today) entitled:

Study links chemical BPA to obesity in children, teens.

But the findings, in today's Journal of the American Medical Association, add to a growing body of research -- in both humans and animals -- questioning BPA's safety, says Philip Landrigan, director of Children's Environmental Health Center at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

STORY: FDA has 'some concern' about chemical BPA

"It's a credible study and it has to be given some attention," says Landrigan, who was not involved with the study.

In particular, the study adds to the notion that certain chemicals are "obesogens" that alter the body's metabolism, making it harder for people to lose weight, even with diet and exercise, says Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, who was not involved in the study.

"Are we programming people to fail?" Birnbaum asks. "That's the question we need to ask, instead of blaming people."

Exposure to BPA -- an estrogen-like chemical used in everything from plastic water bottles to the linings of metal cans and even the coatings on certain paper receipts -- is nearly ubiquitous. More than 92% of Americans over age 6 have detectable levels in their blood, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The new study drew on CDC surveys of 2,838 kids and teens, ages 6 to 19.

My Take: So what can we do? Well, as parents we can make sure we are educated on diet, health and nutrition, so we can make healthy informed decisions for ourselves and our children.? I have found that a diet centered around "plant foods" is best. My favorite resource is Dr. John McDougall, MD.

I also recommend Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" Initiative to help fight childhood obesity.

And stay away from products that contain BPA. This is not that hard to do. And make sure you and your children are getting plenty of exercise. Not all kids have PE in school, and should have 60 minutes of exercise per day. Most of the killer diseases like heart disease, strokes, diabetes and cancer are rooted in poor lifestyle choices. You can make a difference!

Linda Fargo

The woman who gives Bergdorf Goodman its distinctive flair shares her on-the-road routine.

?If I don?t look right, then I just don?t feel right,? says Linda Fargo, senior vice president of women?s fashion, store design, and presentation at New York City?s iconic department store. Which is why she packs more than she needs for her jaunts to European runway shows and vacations on the Italian Riviera. One tip: she packs clothes on hangers in plastic dry-cleaning bags inside her large T. Anthonycase. ?Almost nothing gets wrinkled,? she swears.

Her go-to ensemble includes J Brand Maverick skinny jeans ($268), a black stretch-wool blazer from the Row ($1,150), and an extra-roomy purse?the one she?s holding is by VBH ($3,750). And contrary to what you might expect, Fargo rarely comes home with personal acquisitions. As she puts it, ?I?m so shopped out, I don?t really buy a lot.?

?I love leopard. It?s a bit of a uniform for me. This Chlo? coat is great,? she says.

Fargo packs T. Anthony luggage (from $695), checking one bag and carrying the other on board.

Inside this Goyard tote (designed for Bergdorf?s 111th anniversary) Fargo carries her essentials: red lipstick from YSL, Natura Biss? eye cream, and a bar from La Maison du Chocolat.

Fargo skips heels, opting for Roger Vivier booties ($995), which she ?can get in and out of quickly.?

The Dark Knight Rises Bluray trailer appears, confirms December 3rd release date

Good for over $1 billion at the box office, Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie is probably this year's most anticipated home video release (The Avengers next week may have something to say about that) and now Warner Bros. has given us a trailer for The Dark Knight Rises on Blu-ray. Previous movies in the series have always delivered on Blu-ray, as well as his other recent hit, Inception. Unfortunately the video maxes out at 480p, but we don't need any additional resolution to see the release date listed for both disc and digital download is December 3rd. Rumors have flown about different releases dates and possible extras like a director's cut, but recently sources have indicated no such extended offering is in the works. Whether you think the flick was long enough (or even too long), you can press play to check out the clip embedded after the break...and clear the first Monday in December on your calendar for a trilogy viewing marathon.

Afghanistan: Suicide Bombing Kills 12 In Kabul (VIDEO)

Kabul Protests

KABUL, Sept 18 (Reuters) - A suicide attack on a minibus in the Afghan capital killed 12 people on Tuesday, including seven foreigners, and the Hezb-e-Islami insurgent group claimed responsibility, saying the blast was retaliation for a film mocking the Prophet Mohammad.
"A woman wearing a suicide vest blew herself up in response to the anti-Islam video," said Zubair Sediqqi, a spokesman for the militant faction, which does not usually carry out such attacks.
The attack near Kabul airport underscored growing anger in Afghanistan over the film, which has enraged much of the Muslim world and led to the killing last week of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans.
Thousands of protesters clashed with police in the Afghan capital on Monday, burning cars and hurling rocks at security forces in the worst outbreak of violence since February rioting over the inadvertent burning of Korans by U.S. soldiers.
The suicide attack was the first in Kabul involving a woman and the foreigners killed were mostly Russian and South African pilots working for an international courier company, senior police sources said.
The toll was the highest on foreigners in the city since last April when an Afghan air force pilot gunned down eight U.S. military flight instructors and an American civilian adviser after an argument at Kabul International Airport.
Hezb-e-Islami, which means Islamic Party, is a radical militant group which shares some of the Taliban's anti-foreigner, anti-government aims.
But the political wing of the group, founded by warlord and anti-Soviet fighter Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, has recently been in nascent talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on a peace deal to end the 11-year war.
The attack on the van took place as it stopped to refuel near the airport. Body parts were scattered over an area at the western end of the heavily fortified airport, outside a wedding hall.
Police said several civilians were caught up in the blast, which again underscored the ability of militants to bypass police checkpoints in the city, which had been manned by extra security forces after Monday's rioting.
"The target was a minivan carrying employees of a foreign company who had a contract with Americans. The seven foreigners killed were Russians and South Africans," said General Mohammmad Dawod Amin, a deputy for Kabul's police chief. (Writing by Rob Taylor; Editing by Robert Birsel)
